New Detroit Road Eliminates Tortuous Detour Construc
tion of the new North Santiam highway to Detroit (left)
eliminates tortuous and dangerous detour along railroad
tracks at river grade (right center). At this point, where
Kuckenberg Construction company detonated a blast that
blew away the face of a basalt mountain, the new road begins
to ascend to above the 3580 acre lake level comprising the
normal pool of Detroit reservoir.

Stocks Advance
Irregularly
New York, April 26 (Ji
Buying interest in stocks piled
up a bit today but the demand
lacked any real vigor.
The market closed with a ma
jority of gains running from
fractions to around a point. Nu
merous issues, at the same time,
either remained at Monday's
closing levels or even backed
down a trifle.
Turnover was at the rate of
around 900,000 shares for the
full day.
Chrysler Corp. advanced
more than a point at one time
but later fell back.
Marked up were U.S. Steel,
General Motors, Goodvear,
Douglas Aircraft, Consolidated
Edison, American Tobacco,
Standard Oil (N.J.), and Twen
tieth Century-Fox.
Commonwealth & S o u t hern
reached a new high for 1949 at
one time but the advance was
later trimmed.
Holding back were Sears,
Roebuck, International Harves
ter, United Aircraft, Union Pa
cific and Gulf Oil.
