On Murders Skirts
By TERRY ADLER
Chapter St
"No,M he whispered. "No. I don't
I can't believe it that Bomeone
would wtnt to potion mel"
"Ellen" his voice wm urgent
"don't you think we outfit to let
the police know right sway?" ,
, 6he bit her lip. "But you prom-,
lied! he begged. . . J
Finally she nodded her nead
wearily. -You're probably right.
But don't call them right away
wut tuat until morning- I think
I'd Ukt to tell Mr. Bray vhat's
In store for her first. Ana mining
more will happen until morning.
"Oltav. Ellen, ii vou sy o."
He looked at her, scrutinizing
hrr face with me concern.
"How would you like to get in
to some clothes and go up U
Hubbard's office?"
Ah rluhed into the bedroom.
It wu eight minutes later when
she came out. Under her coat ahe
had on black corduroy slacks and
a soft green turtle-neck sweater.
Oreen fuzzy ear-muffs covered her
gars.
"Have you got the key to the
Inner office?" he asked.
"Bight here." She handed him
the key. They went out, locking
the door behind them.
Freah snow had fallen and
iparltled under the street lights.
The drive to the campus took only
even minutes.
"Well take this flashlight." Raff
mid. "No sense outline the big
light on and announcing to the
whole campus what were ooing.
They walked through the soft
mow and Ellen unlocked the main
front door of the building.
Thev walked down the hall quick
ly and thruogh Ellen's office to the
ioor leading to Hubbard's inner
Mfice.
Raff took the key Ellen had giv
in him earlier and fitted it into
ihe keyhole. The Key turned eas
ily. He turned the knob but the
ioor remained shut. He frowned
ind turned the key again. The
door opened easily.
"This door wasn't shut,' Raff
told her.
"That is peculiar,' said Ellen
T don't know who could have un
locked it."
"Who else has a key?"
"No one. I told you that this
afternoon. No one but Dr. Hub
Oard and the janitor."
"Bray must have had one,' he
reminded her.
"Yes. that's right. That never
occurred to me before. He must
nave had one In order to have
rotten in here that Sunday night." j
"How about Fenton?"
' "Oh. Dr. Fenton doesn't have1
pne I know." She spoke as lfl
ton vi need.
"How did you get this key?" I
ne asked.
"The Janitor," she replied la-.
ronically. "Simple, wasn't it?"
"Too simple ! " he snorted. "I
wonder how many others have
taken advantage of this Idea be
fore. You can have a duplicate
cey made In any place in town for
tjfty cent.
Ellen was excited. 'Well, say!;
Ml we have to do Is ask the jani
tor to tell us who borrowed the
lev recently."
"Good Idea. Ellen. But since
se're here, let's take a look around
'Irst."
He moved the flashlight in his
land. "You know this room. Does
t look ss if anything haa been
JWurbed?"
"No." she said, "everything ook
ihe way It always did.'
She stopped before the chemi
cal shelf. Mechanically she
cached for a bottle.
"This bottle doesn't belong here."
ihe muttered, and put it back In
Its place.
'What bottle?'
This one." She handed htm the
Kvttle. still mystified by his sav-j
lire reaction. "What's so Import-1
ant aoout it?"
He grabbed the bottle from her.
The label showed a list of chem
ical compounds.
"How do you know it was out
of line?" he demanded.
"My goodness, don't bark at me."
j m sorry, nut now aid you
Know?
"Well. I know the cleaning wom
en were in here on Wednesday
morning. Remember. I told you
that And they always oust tne
chemicals and arrange the bottles
according to size. And this btg
bottle was out here by ail Uie
little ones when It obviously be
lo nits In th is s oace bac k he re.1
She looked at him curiously. "That
stuff lsn t, poisonous, is It?
"Do you remember telling me
that Hubbard used to keep an elec
tric heater going in this room?"
"Yes." she said. "There it la
over in the corner.
"And did he keep the windows
closed?
"Yes, almost always. Especially
in the winter.
"And was he a sound sleeper?1
"Yes, I'd say he was a pretty
sound slppoer. But why all these
questions?
