    Man Dies in
Suicide Parade
Denver, April 18 U. An In
quest was exoeeted to be sched
uled today Into the bizarre death
nf Hoy V. Platr, 57, who horri
fied Easter panders by driving
Is flaming car around the down
town section until he was burn
ed fatally.
He died four and a half hours
after passersby dragged him
unconscious, from the flaming
vehicle.
Patrolman Dan Levering call
ed Platz' death "obviously sui
cide," and said he had learned
the unmarried engineer had
been despondent since the death
of his mother a year ago In
Loveland.
A neighbor, Mrs. Norma Pres
nell, said she was sitting In front
of her apartment house when
Platz drive up with the front
seat of his club coupe ablaie.
She shouted to him to leave the
car, "but he Just looked at me
very queerly, re-started the car
and roared away.
Three men, attracted by her
cries, jumped to the running
board and tried to stop the car
but failed. Plats drove to the
rear of the apartment, and was
removed when he became un
conscious and the car slowed to
a stop.
Police aald two cans In the
front of the car Indicated the
driver's seat had been sprayed
with gasoline.
Expectant Mother
Not Hurt in Accident
Portland, April 18 Wi A
young expectant mother aurvlv-
ed a 30-foot plunge in a run
away automobile yesterday.
Another passenger also surviv
ed with only bruises.
Police said the car in which
Mrs. Stewart A. Daniels, 18,
was seated rolled over several
times in the plunge. The hus
band had stepped from the driv
er's seat to kick a stone from
under the wheel of the parked
car and the car started coasting.
Physicians at the St. Vin
cent's hospital reported Mrs.
Daniels was In apparently good
condition. The child is expect
ed to be born soon.

eral timber sales and logging in
forest service lands of washing-
ton and Oregon the first quarter
of 1949 were below the period a
year ago.
The agency reported sales
were $719,850 compared with
$3,403, 198 in the first 1948 first
quarter. Average price was
$12.20 per thousand feet this.
year compared with $10.79.
Oregon timber sales were
$513,137 and Washington's
sales were $208,723.
The cut was 120,884,000 feet
valued at $1,229,583. This com
pared with 253,070,000 board
feet valued at $1,905,785 last
year.

Provincial police patrolled this
smalt villag today to prevent
a new outbreak ot violence by:
ihe Russian Doukhobor "Sons of
Freedom1 ct.
The tomb of Peter "the lord-;
ly" Verigin, first leader of the
sect, was dynamited on a moun
tainside near here early Sunday
and police blamed th 'son
for the blast.
Constable said it was pos
sible the freedomites were em
barking on another of their:
campaigna ox terrorism, having
been quiescent since early last
spring.
The Sunday blast caused con
siderable damage to the granite
mausoleum, which has been the
target of frequent Doukhobor
campaigns since Verigtn died In
the dynamiting of a railroad
coach in 1927,
Yesterday 'a blast was the
third time in three year the
tomb has been attacked by the
Russian sect. Details were not
immediately available, but the
tomb has been guarded by arm
ed Doukhobor and illuminat
ed with giant searchlifihts since
a bombing attack in 1932.
The Doukhobors migrated to
Canada in the early 1900'a to
eicape Russian religious perse
cution.
