'SIRENS OF TOMORROW
Six New Queens Picked
To Succeed Lana, Rita
By VIRGINIA MocPHERSON
Hollywood u.P Mervyn Leroy, who plucked Lana Turner off
a drugstore stool and made her the sex appeal queen of the 1940s,
tossed caution to the wind today and named six girls to succeed
her In the
1950s.
They are Eli

So will Rita Hayworth and
Betty Grable and Linda Darnell.
But the new crop will give

"They're all fine little ac

"And that, believe it or not, is
more important than a size 36

"But tht public taste is changing."
Nowadays, he thinks, gentle

"Like Theda Bara or Pola

Leroy said. "Audiences will be
more grown-up in the 1950s.
They'll want sophisticated sex.
"And, believe me, those four
brunettes and two redheads will
get all the crowns."

REDS RE -ORDER ATOM INFO
No Enemy Atom Bombs
Before '52, Air Head Says
Washington (U.R) Air Secretary W. Stuart Symington believes
no "possible aggressor" will have atomic bombs before 1952.
But that "is all an assumption," he told a house appropriations
subcommittee in published testi
mony.
If Russia doesn't have the
bomb now, it isn't because she
hasn't been boning up on atomic
energy. Rep. Albert Engle, (R.,
Mich.,) said.
Engle put in the record a re
port showing that Russia re
peatedly has ordered copies o
an official U. S. report on the
A-B-C of atomic energy.
The Four Continent Book
Corp. of New York, a subsidi
ary of the Russian Import firm
Amtorg, spent $5,290 with the
U. S. superintendent of docu
ments in 1948 for official re
ports of all kinds. The reports,
airmailed to Russia, cost up to
40 cents each.
Engle said the Russian com
pany "repeatedly re-ordered
copies of the Smyth report on
atomic energy issued by the
army in 1945. Up to 1948, he
said, 25,396 copies of that re
port were issued. But Engle1
didn t kr.ow how many went to
Russia.
"I cannot imagine Russia re
loaeJg similar information if
she had it," Engle said.
she had everything she has
now," he sighed reminiscently.
"You can't train sex appeal into
a girl. Some are Just born with
it."
Leroy said he would even go
so far as to predict his six new
"sex queens" will send out
! more crackles than Turner, Hay-
worth, Grable, et al.
