On Murder's Skirts
By TERRY ADtER
The man with the newspaper
turned up the collar of his coat
Hnd walked the two blocks to
the University hospital. Nuts,
he thought. Probably one of
those sorority stunts. He swung
the door open savagely and col
lided with 8 nurse.
"Oh. Dr. Rafferty! You Just
don't know your own strength,"
the simpered with a double flut
ter of her blue yees
He checked in at the desk.
"I'll be in my room, Miss Pet
erson." "Righto, Dr. Rafferty "
Upstairs, after an invigorat
ing shower, Rafferty felt less
savage. He selected a slim vol
ume from the long shelves of
hooks, lit a cigarette, and set
tled down for an evening of
reading.
- He opened the hook and read
the title page: "Kffects of Anes
thesia on Renal Function" by A.
V. Wolff. Ton minutes later he
was still concentrating on the
title page. What he saw there
was a girl's face, wet hair hang
ing limply and tears slowly
spilling from enormous green
eyes.
. The next day, when McNair,
a slim dark-haired nurse, gave
him a cheery greetinR, Rafferty
suddenly thought of the girl
again. He walked quickly into
the internes' lounge and picked
up the morning newspaper.
"This is ridiculous," he said
ntoud, and then concentrated on
t lip news with a worried pucker
Finally he put the paper down
With a rueful smile. I'll bet it ,
was n gag. he thought again,
and this time with conviction.
The tear-filled eyes came
back once or twice more each
tune a little less clear, a little
less urgent. Ry the end of the
week he had forgotten all about
them.
Chapter 2
Two weeks later the newspa
pers carried a small item that
went unnoticed by Rafferty and
In fact, by all but a few people
in the university.
It stated briefly that Profes
sor Jasper B. Hubbard, head of
the department of biology, had
died of coronary occlusion in his
sleep.
Late in the afternoon, the day
before he died, Hubbard had
been closeted with his secretary
in his inner office for over half
an hour. The door was tightly
closed. In spite of that. Hub
bard's voice came through in a
burst of unpleasant laughter.
The low indistinct murmur of
his secretary was broken by the
sound of a fist banging on a
desk.
The door opened and Hub
bard's secretary walked out
quickly, looking very white and
very angry. She walked past
the students without being
aware they were there, and
went straight to the door of an
office down the long hall mark
ed "D. C. Bray" and under this
"Assoc. Prof."
She entered without knock
ing. Bray looked up from the
book on his desk.
"What's wrong?. Ellen? Some
thing happen?"
Ellen Carter sank down into
the chair opposite and put her
head back and stared at the
ceiling.
"He certainly is a rat," she
finallv said.
Bray looked at her and for
a moment wished he were 20
years younger.
"Well," she began, "I think
it must have been a dirty deal
he handed Bill Griffith this aft
ernoon that decided me. God!
I don't see how he had the nerve
to flunk BUI. Of all the rotten
tricks Anyway, I went in there
as courteous as you please and
said very quietly but firmly
that I was handing in my resig
nation." "What did he say to that."
"Well, he didn't say anything
for a while. Just looked at nie.
After an awfully long time, he
said, 'Miss Carter, just when
did you reach this decision?'
"I told him I had been think
ing about it for the past two
weeks and that "
"Did you say anything about
?" Bray interrupted
"No, Mr. Bray, I said nothing
at all about what you told me
the Sunday evening I found you
in his office.
