Skating is Series of Curves Starting off with the subject of curves (the curves you make on skates, not the kind you lose on skates), I would like to empha size one more that curves are roller skating. The plain sort of forward skating you'll do around a rink will consist of a series of curves. 0 )v ' r- , The author, an ace roller skating professional who is a native of Portland, has writ ten this and two more articles to follow on her art expressly for AP Newsfeatures. While ahe Is currently engaged In exhibition work in New York, he earned fame In Salem ear ly In her career with Instruc tion work at the local ice ar ena. Reports from those who aaw her here and knew her work claim she performed equally well on blades and rollers. FOURTH OF A SERIES Pretend that you're standing en the face of a large clock paint ed on the rink floor. Your feet are at six o'clock. Directly ahead of you Is 12 o'clock. Now turn and face toward nine o'clock. Place the right foot In front with your body leaning toward the center of the clock. Prer on the Inside of the left foot, and push it back. You'll find your self rolling, of course, and by aiming at nine o'clock, you'll reach 12 o'clock. You have completed a half-circle. Why Suffer Any Longer Whtn others fall, us our ChlBMe reinedlea. At this point, without stop ping for a fresh start, lean toward the center (on your left this time), bring the feet parallel, and push with your right foot. Your left foot, aimed at three o'clock, will bring you around to twelve o'clock again. And here is another important rule. Never have the weieht evenly divided over all eight wheels. This causes the skate to go in a straight line, which is referred to among skaters as a "flat." and from now on that is strictly taboo! After you have your for ward skating well under con trol, you're going to get kind of restless, and will want to move on to more exciting things. And that means back ward skating. You may think you'll need eyes in the back of your head for that sort of daring movement on wheels, but you don't really . . . just better balance and lot of confidence. I'll tell you all about It in my next column. Betty Lytle demonstrates the points she discusses today. Hockey at a Glance Patina Cnaat fBv tlia Aaaoelated Praia) Snndar'a Raaulta: B.n Dlaao S.
