Jaycees Want Useless Stop
Signs Removed From Streets
The Salem Junior Chamber of Commerce thinks Salem has
too many isolated "stop" signs that are no longer useful, and
that they create "hazards and death traps" rather than protect
the public.
The Jaycees submitted to the
city council Monday night a
proposed resolution for their re
moval. The Junior chamber would,
however, substitute "stop" signs
on some streets intersecting
through streets where "slow '
signs now exist, and also cov
ered this in the proposed reso
lution. It was referred to the city
manager for investigation.
City Manager J. L. Franzen
Introduced a resolution, which
the council adopted, providing
for "stop" signs at all inter
sections on Market street east
of North Capitol where they do
not already exist. It covers that
part of Market between the old
and the new east city limit.
Other Safety Measures
Other resolutions adopted
bearing on traffic safety were
Resolution by Alderman Rob
ert De Armond for "stop" signs
at 16th and Roosevelt.
Limiting automobile parking
to two hours on the west side
of 12th street between State and
Trade.
Limiting automobile parking
to two hours on the east and
west sides of South Commercial
between Trade and Bellevue.
The manager reported against
a "stop" sign at Cross and South
High.
The city manager reported as
sufficient a petition for the im
provement of Columbia street
from Maple to Hazel, and the
city engineer was instructed to
prepare plans and specifications
A-remonstrance against the
Improvement of 20th street was
reported as sufficient to nullify
two petitions that had been re
ceived. An adverse report was made
by the city manager on a peti
tion that an alley be laid out in
Lot SI of North Salem addition.
A petition was approved for
Installation of a sanitary sewer
on 25th street, beginning at
Shelton ditch, and another peti
tion for extension of a sewer
westerly on Rural avenue.
Would Cut Rentals
Referred to the city manager
was a letter from Paul R. Hen
dricks, in behalf of L. R. Twee
die, o Tweedie Oil company,
requesting that river front
rentals for throe moorage right
holders be reduced from $30 to
$15 a month. Tweedie said he
would be willing to pay $40.
A letter signed by C. A. Mc
riure, engineer for the long
range planning commission,
written in behalf of the street
committee of the commission,
suggesting set-back lines on
South 25th street as the airport
is developed, was received and
filed. City Manager Franzen
explained that the matter is
taken car of by the master air
port plan which is approved by
