Grocer Robbed
In His Store
William Grabelman, proprie
tor of the Mission Street mar
ket, at 1365 Mission, was held
up and robbed of over $200 in
his store at about 10:30 o'clock
Friday night.
Grabelman told officers he
was at work In the rear of the
store when the robber entered.
He was a young man and mask
ed, and stammered to the degree
that he failed to utter an Intel
ligible word. That, the police
say, may or may not have been
a ruse.
All he said seemed to be "ah,
ah, ah." He went to the cash
register and took the bills while
he held Grabelman under cover
with a small revolver. He back
ed out of the store and disap
peared northerly on 14th street.
'Grass Roots'
(Continued from Page 1)
His largest audience in the
four stops was at the Lebanon
union high school, where he was
the recipient of a 10-pound cut
throat trout, the gift of the San
tiam Fish and Game club and
a strawberry cake produced by
the girls of the home economics
class of the school. He was al
so given an honorary .member
ship card in the sports club.
His final talk in the four
towns took place in Sweet
Home. Here Keith Gabriel,
president of the Sweet Home
high school student body, intro
duced the presidential aspirant.
Stassen said that one of his
purposes in choosing some of
the smaller cities in which to
make brief appearances, was to
become better acquainted with
the conditions that exist both
in rural and urban sections of
the country.
Of course, I like to meet the
people too, and I feel it import
ant to talk to the younger gen
eration for it will devolve upon
them to take over the problems
of the cities, counties, state and
nation, in the not too distant
future," Stassen said.
Earl Behrens, veteran political
reporter of the San Francisco
Chronicle, who joined the Stas
sen party in Idaho, declared that
in more than 25 years of poli
tical reporting he had never en
countered a candidate for high
office with the energy displayed
by Stassen.
"He acts as if he enjoys every
minute of his contact with the
people," said the newspaperman
Stassen traveled from Sweet
Home to Eugene where he made
the principal talk before the
annual press conferenae there.

Monday a Holiday bur
Stores to Open as Usual
Since Washington's birthday, February 22, falls on Sunday thi
year, Monday will'be a legal holiday in Oregon, That is the state
law.
The day has not been pro--
claimed as a national legal holi-
day, though it is nationally ob
served. There are no national
holidays in the United States.
In Salem the day will be ob
served as usual. The city coun
cil will, however, have its reg
ular meeting Monday night.
City Attorney Chris J. Kow
itz takes the position there is no
legal inhibition on transaction
of official business on a legal
holiday, except judicial busi
ness. He cites the fact that the
state legislature has been jn
session on both Lincoln's and
Washington's birthdays.
Some aldermen expressed a
word of caution against trans
acting such business as legisla
tion pertaining to bond issues,
but the city attorney thinks
business of that kind can be
safely handled. An ordinance
bill will be before the council
Monday night authorizing the
issue of $82,528.40 in Bancroft
Improvement bonds. The sum
will wipe out all outstanding
warrants in the street improve
ment fund. All other outstand
ing warrants will be wiped out
in a few weeks.
Salem schools will not close
Monday. The post office will
observe a full holiday, as will
banks and public offices, with
the exception of sheriff's and
police offices, and the offices of
the state tax commission which
will be open for the convenience
of state income taxpayers. The
closure includes the state em
ployment office and the Salem
Public library. The library will
observe the usual Sunday hours
from 2 to 5 p.m.
For state employes it will be a
long week-end. Under the 40-
hour week schedule public of
fices are not open Saturday, so
state workers get three days off.
The state tax office is again an
exception, for it is open today
for income taxpayers.
Stores and restaurants will do
business as usual Monday,
Apperson Heads
