Old Way Better
WashinRlon W This year's
incubntnr chicks have reason to
wish for the old-fashioned sit
ting hen,
The agriculture department
reported today that the modern,
mechanical "mothers" aren't do
ing so well. The fuel oil short
age, you know.
Thai, coupled with a drop in
demand, caused commercial
chick output in January to drop
nine percent below that of Jan
uary. 1047, the department said.

Chapter 10
All Bruce could remember
was the fact that It wai hla own
Antoinette who lay inside on the
operating table, Inert, unknow
ing. There was comfort in the
fact that the beat man In the
field was In charge; and with
all his soul he hung on to that
thought. As he saw Karat
through the glass partitions,
the now scrubbed, sterile Karat,
walking confidently into the op
erating room, he uttered a pray
er, not to God exactly but di
rectly to the man, Karat, to
perform in the same sure man-
ner In which he wrote for the
I up and coming M. D's.
I His thoughts drifted back-
momentarily to the time he
had waited with Austin Ham'
mond in the hospital in Los
Angeles. He had come a long,
long way. He would soon be a
part of such an institution as
this. Or would he? Right now
he sat in an agony of fright,
completely shorn of skill of any
sort, He could not have lifted
a finger to help anybody.
This Dr. Karat though Lord,
how he envied him his poise,
his assured, know-how attitude.
' But his brain could not for
get T'nette for long. All at once
he remembered again La Jolla
and the Casa de Manana. The
spume from the tumbling wat
era at his and T'nette's feet. And
later, alone in their room, with
the moonlight drifting in
It had begun then that nieht,
this new little creature that had
taken T'nette down Into the
Valley.
He did not know how long
he had been waiting. All at
once Karat was standing beside
mm. Ana he might have been
just any old Joe the way he
smiled and said:
"You'd better get some sleep,
That's what your wife is do
ing. And the boy will be when
they get him cleaned up."
"Boy?"
"You have a son Doctor."
It got him being called "Doc
tor" by one of the greatest of
tnem. it was a while before he
could trust his voice.
"My wife?"
"A game fighter."
"She will be all right?1
Karat's eyes became soft or
rather, a little less hard than
usual.
"That caliber of woman does
not fold easily."
But even that caliber of wo
man MnttlmJ lni 'x 1 . i
--- -a ,ui jx Dieey, aim
ii. was nut unin iaie tnai even
ing that the nurse let Bruce
peep in on T'nette. He tiptoed
to the bed. T'nette slept peace
fully. She was white like a
weary gardenia, and her hands,
lay quite still like birds shot
down from flight.
"My love," he whispered very
hoarsely. "My son's mother.
My daughter's mother." Then
he touched her brow with his
lips. She stirred, murmured
something unintelligible from
her dreamland. Then the nurse
led him away,
"Mrs. Hammond left the keys
to her car. It's in the sarase
across the street. You'd better
go home and get some sleep,
Dr. Crane."
He f o u n d Nola's car. Some
how he got onto the Harlem
Speedway, and somehow he
found his way to the winding
road that led to Nola's house!
It was a typical black Con
necticut night. Through the
chaos and muddle of his mind
the one fact that made sense
or that mattered was that
T'nette lived. But only, he real
ized a little wildly, because of
the genius of Dr. Karat, because
of his absolute knowledge and
authority. That's what being
an M.D. meant. A man had to
be so much more than a man.
He had to be a rock immov
able, undefeatable.
Most of all, he had to have
complete faith in himself.
Aimlessly Bruce switched on
the radio, dialed up and down.
Suddenly his hand froze on the
knob as he tuned in the orches
tra playing in the Bainbow
room back there in the city high
above the corner of Fifth Aven
ue and Fiftieth street. The band
was just easing into its theme
song of unmistakable rhythm.
It was an odd thing called "Pi
ano Madness." Bruce could
hear the roaring applause of
Room and Beard ...

the dancers and then unex
pectedly, yet completely expect
ed, Homer Gregg's voice bid
ding the the revelers a pleas
ant goodnight.
He switched off the radio. It
wasn't exactly that he felt re
gret remembering the old years.
They had, though, been care
free, tune-filled years. Ana on
ly today had he realized what
really lay before him.
He felt suddenly incompetent
incapable of the profession
for which he had worked so
hard to enter. But perhaps it
was all a dream anyway. Per
haps he had never left the band.
Any minute he would find him
self seated at the piano. The
flood lights would be exploding
cellingward. The dance kids
would be yelling as he beat out
his low, low-down rhythms
But he was not dreaming.
And he was glad he was not.
As soon as T'nette was com
pletely out of danger he would
return to California to receive
his M.D. Of course, he hadn't
earned it. It belonged rightful
ly to Antoinette, as a reward
for loyalty, for faith, for devo
tion. Yet, T'nette was the one
who should don the green hood.
She should march In the solemn ,
procession. And the degree r
should read:
"Antoinette Crane, M.D."
That thought strengthened
him. All at once he no longer
drove alone along the dark
Connecticut road. And fear
fled. For her spirit was riding
forward with him into the night.
With new courage he threw
back his head, pressed the auto
matic button that released the
top of the convertable allowing
it to fly back, bringing into
view the far 'off stars. Of course
Karat had been masterful. He
had had years of training. And
what Karat had done Bruce
would be able to do.
With a steady food he press
ed down on the accelerator, and
as he glanced starward, he said
in a leved, husky voice:
Anyhow, my dearest, I'll do
my best."
