Market Break Sends
Price of Foods Down
Washington, Feb. 21 OD The
market break sent food prices
down 3! percent, the bureau
of labor statistics reported last
night. But other consumer items
appear to be holding at post
war record highs.
The official report is the gov
ernment's first appraisal of the
commodity market slump. It
seemed to promise no sharp
drop in the overall cost of
living.
Even In foods the major de
clines centered in a few items.
"Others have been only slightly
affected and some have even
increased," said the statement.
It was signed by Ewan Clague,
commissioner of labor statistics.

Irregularly
New York, Feb. 21 MV-In
one of the slowest sessions of
the past four years, the stock
market made some selective
progress today although many
leaders faltered.
There was a little further
short covering for the lengthy
week-end. Major markets will
recess Monday In observance of
Washington's birthday. Custom
ers, on the -whole, gave Wall
Street a wide berth and board
rooms were virtually deserted.
Those who appeared still
maintained a cautious attitude.
There was a certain amount of
nibbling for a technical come
back. Accounts were trimmed
by those still skeptical regarding
economic situations at home and
abroad, taxes, labor and commo
dity fluctuations.
