Carolina Island Is Tossed
Aside for Cubs' Training
Los Angeles, Jan. 21 U. Catalina island, for years the
spring training base of the Chicago Cubs, was told today to
depend on its bird farm to attract tourists. The Cubs will stay
on the mainland this year.
The National league club said they would remain at Wrigley
field because only five days' practice could be held at Catalina
before their first exhibition game March 6. Commissioner
A. B. Chandler has banned spring training before March 1.
Chilly breezes and inclement weather on the island last
spring added to the risk of sore arms and legs.
Chuckin' Charlie
Is a Two Sport
Tossin' Artist
Memphis, Tenn. Charles
Conerly, the man from Mississ
ippi who made football passing
history this season, intends to
cling to his nickname of
"Chuckin' Charlie either on
the gridiron, the baseball dia
mond, or both.
Conerly was not mentioned
in the draft sessions of the pro
football leagues because two pro
clubs already have priority on
his services as a money perform
er.
The Washington Redskins
of the national loop recogniz
ed his talent as far back as
1945 but Charlie went into
the army that year. In 1946
the Brooklyn Dodgers of the
All-America Conference nam
ed Chunker in Its draft.
But before he makes any de
cisions about his football future,
Conerly is considering a base
ball career. He says the Detroit
Cubs have contacted him about
a contract.
He also wants to wait until
he's graduated from Ole Miss
this spring "to keep my amateur
status and pitch for the school
team."
Sports writers who've seen
Conerly in both roles say It's ob
vious that he'll do much better
in shoulder pads than spiked
cleats. They point to the fact
that the national collegiate ath
letic bureau picked him and his
receiver, end Barney Poole, as
"the best passing battery in mo
dern times."
For the dog-eared record
again: Conerly completed 133
out of 233 heaves, made 18
touchdown tosses and led Mis
sissippi to its first Southeast
ern Conference crown.
The same experts call Charlie
"a mediocre pitcher,, and not
a had outfielder."
Anyway, the "Roach" anoth
er name lie earned by his zig
zag running style thinks he'd
like the double sports life for a
profession. He's been pitching
pigskins and baseballs "for free"
quite a while now.
