Stocks Decline
Irregularly
New York, Jan. 21 (P) The
stock market slipped into lower
ground today as rallies in rails
and air transports failed to car
ry through.
Many early gains registered
by carrier and air line issues in
forenoon trading were trimmed
or converted into losses by mo
derate late selling. Other groups
ahead at times included oils and
farm implements. Narrow de
clines were widely distributed
near the close. Total transfers
expanded to the neighborhood of
900,000 shares.
New 1947-48 lows were touch
ed by Paramount Pictures, and
Eastman Kodak. Also skidding
to losing territory were Pacific
Western Oil, U.S. Steel, General
Motors, Douglas Aircraft, U.S.
Gypsum, Union Carbide, Johns-
Manville and International Nick
el.
Rails were propped by ap
pearance of some favorable 1947
earnings estimates and optimis
tic forecasts of 1948 results. A
rise in zinc prices aided some of
the metal issues. Trading was
reported largely professional.
Bonds were steady. Wheat at
Chicago closed of a cent a
bushel lower to 1 cent higher,
corn unchanged to 2Vs lower
and oats Yi down to Vt up Cot
ton near the finish was off $1.20
a bale to up 10 cents.
Markets Briefed

Stocks lower in active trading

ments did not trade.
Curb stocks irregular.
Wheat futures closed up 1

Hogs and cattle lower; sheep

Corn Leads in I
Grain Boosts
Chicago, Jan. 21 (IP) A strong
demand for cash corn supported
an upturn for yellow cereal fu
tures on the board of trade to
day. The strength of corn
brought about gains in wheat
and oats.
Buying by a broker with
northwestern connections and
by cash houses was conspicuous
on the upturn.
Some of the gain was lost prior
to the close, but the market
continued to have a firm under
tone. Wheat, however, ended on a
weak tone following announce
ment by Jesse Gilmer, president
of the commodity credit cor
poration, that only 75,000,000 to
80,000.000 bushels of wheat and
flour needed to be purchased to
meet the government's export
goal.
Wheat ended V lower to 1
cent higher, May $".99i-Vi was
unchanged to 27 higher, May
$2.67 34-2.68, oats were V low
er to 2-y, higher, May $1.28 A-,

egon led in volume with 875,-
515,000 feet of timber bringing

Farm Recruiting
Plan Formulated
Eighty state employment ser
vice offices will be available
throughout the state next sum
mer to aid in recruiting farm
labor, the newly-formed agri
cultural advisory council was
told at its first meeting yester
day.
In addition to 32 year around
offices the state employment
service will maintain seasonal
offices in areas where farm la
bor demand is especially great.
During the peak of the season
more than 65,000 farm workers
are needed in Oregon.
The group elected Truman
Chase, Eugene, chairman; Earl
P. Lovell, OSES director, as
secretary.
Labor Board Has
2,064 Union Cases
Washington, Jan. 21 W) The
national labor relations board
reported today it was swamped
with a record-breaking total of
2,064 new cases during Decem
ber.
The rush was the greatest in
the board's 12-year history. It
was attributed in part to the
fact that many unions stayed
away from the board for months
after the Taft-Hartley act be
came effective last Aug. 22.

To Use Indians
Portland, Ore., Jan. 21 U.J-
A. W. O'Connell, Gresham, Or..,
packer, said today he would pro
pose establishment of an experi
mental Indian village in the ber
ry fields near Gresham to pro
vide employment for Navajo and
Hop! Indians.
O'Connell said the plan was
the result of conferences between
himself and William E. Warne,
assistant secretary of interior,
and James Stewart, superintend
ent of the Navajo reservation.
The proposal will be mad at
meeting in Phoenix, Ariz., Janu
ary 29.
Indians of the two southwest
ern tribes are facing starvation
because of increased population
and decreases in their sheep
flocks, according to O'Connell.
But, he said, there is employ
ment for thousands of Indians in
Pacific coast terry growing dis
tricts. Some 30 families comprising
approximately 300 Indians would
make up the first experimental
village, according to the plan.
Later, if the arrangement prov
ed successful, other villages
would be established elsewhere,
O'Connell said.
