No Cause for Alarm Here
On Foot and Mouth Disease

There is no cause for alarm among stockmen concerning foot
and mouth disease, now prevalent in Mexico, Dr. B. T. Simms,
chief of the U.S. bureau of animal industry, told a Portland meet
ing of veterinarians, stockmen,

Aroused Veterans Demand

City Manager J. L. Franzen, Mayor Robert L. Elfstrom, Engi
neer J. H. Davis and the Salem housing authority, headed by W. J.
Braun will confer shortly, probably Tuesday afternoon, to decide
what can be done to get the vet-

This was ordered by motion
at the city council meeting Mon
day night when the veterans,
with Allan Barber as their
spokesman, moved in on the
council in force with a demand
that action be taken. They were
armed with a petition signed
with some 265 names. They
want paved streets, concrete
sidewalks, a playground area for
children and equipment.
Suggestion that the conference
be called was made by Mayor
Elfstrom who conceded that "we
have been a little bit careless."
Motion that the mayor's sugges
tion be adopted was made by Al
derman Gille, who said he sym
pathized with the veterans.
"I was out there Saturday,"
said Gille, "and it looks like Hol
ligan's pigpen."
"A good many of the gravel
walks the city put in are under
mud now," said Barber. "Con
crete walks are something we
won't back down on. The area
will still be muddy four or five
months from now and after that
it will be a dust bowl."
Manager Franzen said some
thing over $11,200 had been
turned over to the city from the
colony rentals, of which over
$7000 had been applied to the
streets, and over $4000 was on
hand. Joe Hopkins, manager of
the colony, said that in federal
funds about $34,000 a year was
available, which should bring a
surplus of $8000 or $10,000 ap
plicable to improvements.

The disease may occur in this
country at any time but it may
not come from Mexico, since
Belgium, England, France, Latin
America and South America all
are sources of infection.
Special training has been giv
en a corps of BAI men in diag
nosis, disinfection and control of
the disease so that it may be
stamped out the moment it ap
pears. A quarantine line has
been set up extending from 300
miles south of the Texas border
on the Gulf of Mexico side to
700 miles south of the border on
the Pacific side. This line is be
ing patrolled and the plan is to
gradually push disease control
south from there. No foot and
mouth disease has occurred
north of the quarantine line.
Interest in the relation of un-
dulant fever in humans to bru
cellosis (contagious abortion) in
dairy cattle has increased very
rapidly in the past five years,
Simms said in noting that the
consuming public has the right
to demand that their milk and
meat be wholesome and free
from disease.
Dr. Ray Staub, Portland phy
sician, pointed out that undulant
fever is much more prevalent in
humans than is generally re
alized because the organism is
difficult to detect in the. blood
stream except in the febrile, or
feverish, stage. He scored the
"lack of enthusiam" of the med
ical profession against the dis
ease and stressed the necessity
of more learning and experi
mental research on the human
element of the problem

Bailey's Herd Makes
High Registration
The herd of registered Jersey
cattle owned by Floyd L. Bailey,
Jefferson, is announced by the
American Jersey Cattle club,
from their offices in Columbus,
Ohio, as having completed a
year's work in official Herd Im
provement Registry testing with
an average production of 7551
pounds milk and 435 pounds
butterfat per cow. The herd con
tained an average of eight milk
ing cows during the year.
All tests on this herd were
conducted by the Oregon State
college and verified by The
American Jersey Cattle club.
In accomplishing this produc
tion the Bailey herd has joined
the select group of Jersey herds
in which the cows have produc
ed more than two times the
amount of butterfat obtained
from the average dairy cow in
the United Slates.

cows is the final need in case of
continued trouble.
