Chapter 18
A stunned silence filled the
little drug store. Conversation
died as though a switch had
been turned cutting it off. All
eyes were centered on the small
harpfnnteri bOV wilO Stood in
front of Pam Carter.
Sensing the effect of his start
ling announcement he began to
swagger a bit. He tucked his
grubby thumbs in his overall
suspenders and scratched the
back of one leg with the foot of
the other.
"I said Constable Binny wants
you . . ." he repeated.
Pam nodded and slid off her
stool. "I heard you, son."
Brent, who had been buying
adhesive plaster, crossed to take
her elbow and together they left
the store, the small boy strutting
importantly before them.
"Binny is not exactly the soul
of discretion, is he?" Pam ob
served. "Hardly. Unless for some
reason he wanted it made pub
lic. I suppose in a village like
Cove Point there's no such thing
as a secret."
"Well, it looks like the whole
town is in on this."
Pam gestured toward the end
of the dock. Most of the work -
ers had come out of the sardine
factory and were gathered in a
knot. Two men were work
ing a winch used for hoisting
cargoes from dories. The wheel,
badly in need of oiling, turned
now with a rasping shriek that
vied with the penetrating cries
of seagulls overhead.
It was a gray day. The ocean
rolled in in sullen leaden swells,
slapping against the pilings and
not breaking until they were al
most on the beach. As Pam
looked toward the end of the
pier and saw the winch lift a
sodden inert bundle onto the
warped planking she knew this
was a scene sne would always
remember. Brent's fingersl
tightened on her arm. His face I
, ' .
-k ?,U E through
with this, Pam?"
She shot him a quick rueful
little smile.
I sort of have t0.
don't I, p"t
Don't worry, can
I do.'!
But when the group parted
for her and she gazed down at
the dead man lying in widen
ing pool of sea water, she wasn't
so sure, me pier lurcned sick-
eningly; she shut her eyes and
swallowed hard.
"He's not a pretty sight,
I ma'am, but if you'll just take a
quick look."
Constable Binny kneeling by
the man's head peered up at
her.
The onlookers held their
i breaths. So still was it that ex
cept for the seagull's cries, the
strain and creak of the pier in
the tide and the water from
the dead man's clothes seeping
through the cracks and drip
ping into the ocean below, there
i was no sound.
Pam bent lower and opened
her eyes.
Three days of being battered
I by relentless seas had done their
I work. Pam's glance crept from
the scuffed shoes up the wet
twisted serge trousers, over the
torn blue shirt and pea jacket
to the pasty bruised face with
the blurred sightless eyes. Even
in prolonged death there was a
cruel uplifted sneer to the rigid
mouth. She nodded quickly
"It's the same man."
Then she crossed to the side of
the pier and gave up the so re
cently enjoyed chocolate soda.
When Pam emerged from the
wave of nausea that had swept
over her she realized that a
jacket had been put across her
i shoulders and that a worn cool
hand was holding her forehead
The jacket was Brent's but
the hand belonged to one of the
women cannery workers. Her
calm gray eyes met Pam's sym
pathetically.
"That was an ugly sight for
ye to look upon, Miz Carter."
Pam managed a feeble smile.
"I didn't know I had such a
queasy tummy, thank you for
helping me."
."One of the ladies is bringing
ye some hot cofee . . . that will
strengthin yer stomach."
Pam stared at her curiously. .
"Didn't it bother you? see
ing that that dead man?"
The older woman sighed.
"Most of us have seen the sea

The cool gray eyes looked sea
ward and Pam k'new she was
I staring at the descendant of gen
erations of women who had
paced the widow's walks of New
England houses waiting for a
glimpse of sail women who
had watched a fishing fleet de
part for the Grand Banks with
a prayer knowing in their hearts
that some one among those men
would not return,
Another woman arrived with
a pot of steaming coffee and
Pam gulped the scalding liquid
gratefully. Brent came up a
moment later, his expression
was anxious. "How are you
feeling now, pet?"
"Better, thanks to these kind
women," she said a bit shortly.
He grinned. "Binny was deter
mined to talk to me and he
wants to speak to you some
more."
Pam's stomach seemed to turn
over. "Oh Brent, I couldn't face
that sight again. It's just too
much,"
Don't worry, he's under can-
ivas now."
Clinging to his arm, Pam ap
proached the tarpaulin-covered
mound. Constaole Binny's nut
brown eyes turned up to her al
most sheepishly.
"Sorry to have upset you
ma'am, but you were the only
I person that could identify hir.
Veil me now, where did you
say the wound was?"
Pam shut her eyes, seeing
again the corpse in the tower
room.
"I don't think I said definite
ly, Constable, but the man was
lying face up and there was a
pool of blood under his head. I
supposed someone had struck
him from behind.
