East Salem Nut Harvest
Being Brought to Close
East Salem, Sept. 24 Harvesting of one of the last season
crops grown in East Salem communities, filberts,' has almost
been finished with only one large orchard, that of Mrs. B. George
of Seattle yet to be picked up.
Monday the pickers at the Earl
Wood orchard on Lancaster
drive finished the first picking
and only a very few will be left
for going over the second time.
It is the first time in several
years that filberts have fallen
for general harvesting before the
first of October. Smaller orch
ards and trees around the homes
have been finished for more than
a week. It is also the first time
in several years that practically
no rain fell during the harvest
and the nuts will have no mud
on them and very little moisture
left in them to dry out. Weights
received from the growers' as
sociation this past week for last
year's crop show a very heavy
shrinkage that this year's "rop
will not have.
There was no shortage of
labor for the picking, with grow
ers at most of the orchards turn
ing away many applicants each
day and school children who
have picked up nuts on Saturday
for several years found no help
needed. Most of the applicants
for work were young men or
men with their families. Wal
nuts will be down for general
picking in not more than a week
in most orchards. i
