Motors and steels led the late decline. Dealings quickened suf ficiently to put the recording ma chinery 4 minutes late toward the last. Transfers ran to about 1,000,000 shares. Santa Fe, International Harves ter, Eastman Kodak. Allied Chemical, Du Pont, American Woolen, Kennecott, Union Paci fic, Norfolk & Western and Tex as Co. Lows for the year were recorded for Shcnley, American Tobacco "B" and many others. Bonds backed away. TradingVSoot Hops Very Liaht There were no important de velopments in the hop market situation in the Pacific north west during the month ending April 5, according to reports to the production and marketing administration, USDA. Trading in spot hops has been rather light, with purchases confined to small, scattered lots, indicat ing that the demand is more for the purpose of filling in sup plies rather than for building up large reserve stocks. Reports in dicate that many brewers have sufficient stocks on hand or un der contract to take care of their requirements until new crop hops are available. Total sales of 1946 crop of hops by the growers in this area during past month would not amount to more than a few hundred bales. According to the estimates in the trade, there were only about 4000 bales of last year's hops remaining in the hands of the individual growers in the entire Pacific northwest on April 1. Some hop growing districts have report ed that contracting of 1947 crops has been rather brisk during re cent weeks, while others report very little contracting. Prices being offered on contracts arc somewhat less than earlier in the year, and are around 45 cents per pound for seeded hops with premiums and discounts, as outlined in previous reports, based on the percentage of leaves and stems. The acreage in hops this year in the Pacific northwest will be slightly less than a year ago. The hop plants appear to have withstood the winter in good shape in all the hop growing districts and are making satisfactory growth with the season about two weeks earlier than last year. Reed today stayed major por tions of an anti-trust judgment against a group of leading mo tion picture producers, distribu tors and exhibitors. Reed issued the stay order, de spite objections o the justice de partment, to allow the movie firms to appeal to the supreme court not later than May 20. The principal firms involved are Paramount Pictures, Inc., Loew's, Inc., Radio-Keilh-Or-phoum Corp., Warner Brothers Pictures, Inc., and 20th Century Fox Film Corp., and their sub sidiaries. Other defendants are Columbia Pictures Corp., Univer sal Corp., and United Artists Corp. The judgment was entered by a special three-judge U. S. dis trict court at New York on Dec. 31. It was an outgrowth of a suit filed by the government in 1B38 under the Sherman anti trust act, charging an illegal mo nopoly of the movie industry. The government, in opposing the stay, said it plans to file a cross-appeal, asking an even broader order against the firms. The government objected be cause the lower court did not find a monopoly and did not or der divorcement of producing from other features of the in dustry.
