Speculation Heard on Leadership Of Next Oregon Legislature As the longest legislative session in the history of Oregon seems to be drawing to a close today is the 81st day attention is being given to who will be the presiding officers of the 45th biennial legislative session. Sen. Doug-' las McKay, of Marion county, is the only announced candidate for the presidency of the sen ate thus far. Although Sen. Mc Kay has made no campaign, senate observers feel that he has the best chance for the im portant position at this particu lar time. However, the name of Sen. Ernest R. Fatland of Condon is also mentioned. Sen. Fatland served in the house for a num ber of years, being speaker in the 1B39 session. During the present session he- has been chairman of the senate assess ment and taxation committee and is recognized as an effici ent committee chairman as well as effective when debating measures on the floor of the house. Both Senators Earl Newbry and William "Walsh wore candi- other house member who has attracted attention through his handling of bills on the floor and the effectiveness of the few speeches that he has made on the house floor.. Several freshmen house mem bers, who if returned for a few sessions, will certainly figure in future speakership contests are Reps. Martin P. Gallagher of Malheur county, Carl H Francis of Yamhill county. At least three house mem bers are ambitious to move up to the senate. Speaker Hall has already announced that he will not seek re-election to the house and it is understood that he will enter the race for senator from Multnomah county. Rep. Pat Lonergan is known to desire toi Norway Is Subject round out his legislative career .. with a term in the senate and TOr UniT Meeting Rep. Joe Wilson, frequently referred to as the "elusive member of the house" due to his absence from the floor when important legislation is considered, has declared that he will seek election to the sen ate in the 1948 elections. On numerous occa sions he has relieved Speaker John Hall in the chair and ha demonstrated his fitness as a presiding officer. Friends of Rep. Jack Green wood of Clackamas county are urging him to throw his hat in the ring. Pep.
