50-Voice Choir
Gives Canlafa
The 50-voice choir of the First
Evangelical United Brethren
church, Marion and Summer
streets, under the direction of
Rev. Wilmer N. Brown, will pre
sent an illustrated cantata pag
eant, entitled "Tarry Ye Until,
Sunday at 7:30 p.m. Music, dra
ma and art will be blended to
gether in recalling the scenes of
some of the incidents of the last
days of our Saviour's life on
earth. The well-known and lov
ed sacred cantata, "Olivet ti
Calvary" by J. H. Maunder, will j
gram. The setting for the pag
eant, written by Rev. Wilmer N
Brown, is in the Upper Room
with Peter and John shown in
the foreground as they are tar
rying for Ponticost.
The church organist, Mr. Wi;
Ham Fawk, will present 15 min
utcs of Easter music precedina

The minister will bring the

Walk of the Christian."
Something new in church
architecture has been created
by a world-famous architect and
now becomes a reality in Colum
bus, Ind. It is unique and so
original in design that many peo
pie will not like it when they
first see it. This is a penalty
imposed on originality by a peo
pie accustomed to styles derived
from alien cultures. We natural
ly look for classic columns,
pointed arches and slender spires
in our church buildings, but the
Tabernacle Church of Christ
admits none of these in its de
sign. It is a system of straight
lines, square openings and off
center balance.
This free-hand sketch of the
exterior was made from a van
tage point diagonally across the
street from the church and
shows a view of the north front
entrance, the tower, the side
walk esplanade, public entry to
the reflecting pool and the ex
treme depth of the structure on
the east with its windowless
facade. The one window on the
east at the rear of the building
admits the morning light not to
the auditorium proper, but to a
space back of the choir loft and
intensifies the light on the sym
bolic cross that is one of the
features of the church.
The interior appointments of
the church are strikingly dif
ferent and yet are in complete
accord with the accepted re
ligious aims and spiritual rela
tionship of the Disciples of
Christ. There is a feeling that
expense has not been an im
portant or an imposed handicap
in the planning or the equip
ment of the church, yet, because
of its simplicity pure beauty
transcends all ideas of splendor.
The Finnish architect, Eliel
Sarrinen, created the design, and
the Hoosier firm of Pierre &
Wright assisted in carrying out
the plan.
