This dates the Gothic style in the 13th century which has been called the greatest century m human history because it fused into perfect union three impor tant human activities: art, reli gion and philosophy. Gothic art and architecture quickly spread throughout the continent and across the channel to England where it became the principal style for church build ings. One of the identifying details of the Gothic is the pointed arch used in the begin ning for structural reasons but in later examples of religious architecture it was used purely for ornament. Here in America the pointed arch was accepted universally in early church buildings. Today it is the hall-mark of religious structures. ' Usually built of stone, brick and concrete with the inner support structure of fabricated steel in the present time, here in New England two or three centuries ago the build ers were compelled to use wood Painted white, the symbol of purity these church buildings are first of all religious struc tures and without question they are beautiful. The drawing above shows a view of the First Congregational church in Ipswich, Mass. It is a rare example of wood Gothic It contains much of historic in terest. Erected in 1846, it is the latter of five successive houses of worship on this site. The church organization dates from 1634.
