Cily and County
Pad on Dogs
The county dog control board
Friday morning prepared tenta
tive form of an agreement to be
submitted to the city of Salem
covering collection of dog licens
es in the city and the city's share
of the proceeds. The agreement
as proposed would continue for
three years and is subject to
approval by the county court.
When this is given it will be
transmitted to the city recorder
for approval by the city council.
Under the agreement the city
would employ the necessary offi
cers after March 1 to collect dog
licenses which then have be
come delinquent. License fees
would be $1 for males and $2
for females and a $2 penalty
would attach after March 1.
Most drastic change in the
proposed agreement from any in
the past provides that the city
shall receive, its share of li
cense money only from fees col
lected after March 1, when de
linquency attaches. The city
would receive 80 percent of
the license fees only, less pen
alties, less cost of license tags
and applications and a pro rata
share of indemnities.
The city would enforce the dog
license statute inside the city
limits only.
All license fees collected by
the city, with penalties, are to
be turned over to the county
clerk within 30 days after col
lection and in turn the county
would return 80 percent of the
license fee money, with deduc
tions named.

Post Office
Records Broken
Thursday's record of 137,000
cancellations of letters const!
tutcd the biggest day's business
in the history of the Salem post
office, according to announce
ment of Postmaster Albert
Gragg. The cancellations only
account for the matter that
went through the machines and
does not take into consideration
mail handled by meters in var
ious state departments and busi
ness houses. And it does not in
clude parcel post since no record
is kept of the number of pack
ages handled, either outgoing or
incoming. The previous high
mark in the connection of letter
cancellation occurred on Dec.
18, 1945, when the machine re
corded 136,000.
More than a car and a half
of parcel post packages were
received over-night while a car
load was sent out.
Another indication of the vol
ume being handled, it was point
ed out, was that nine dividing
cases are now being used as com
pared with three or four during
ordinary times. A half dozen
24 hour shifts are being employ
ed to keep up with the record
rush of Christmas greeting cards
and letters.
Parcel post, general delivery
and stamp windows will be kept
open until 6 o'clock Saturday
evening while packages will be
delivered Sunday.
"We expect to have every
thing cleaned up the evening of
December 24th so that all hands
may enjoy Christmas day with
their families," Postmaster
Gragg stated.

Christmas Displays
Some especially fine Christ
mas displays have been set up
around the cily. Among them
is one at the John Anderson
residence, 1780 North Cottage,
and another is at the East Salem
fire station.
At the Anderson home the
display is a memorial to Orin
Anderson, brother of John An
derson, who died 10 years ago
this Christmas, and there is
music from 7 to 10 o'clock each
night. The display covers most
of a vacant lot adjacent to the
home.
At the East Salem fire station
over 100 Christmas lights have
been installed for the Holiday
season, and visitors are wel
comed. The station is located
on State street, one of the main
traveled traffic arteries of the
city.
Cars driven by Paul V. Gil

Susie Really
Jealous Monkey
Portland, Dec. 21 W) Arthur
M. Greenhall, zoo director, fin
ally is convinced that Susie is
the jealous female monkey he
once knew as Butch.
The monkey was bought re
cently by E. S. Hughes, Grants
Pass, from a sideshow, where he
thought she was not being
treated properly.
Hughes sent her to the Port
land zoo, where Susie leaped
onto Greenhall and threw her
arms around him.
Gecnhall thought then she
might be the spider monkey
which Loretta Sullivan of De
troit, Mich., sent to the zoo in
1942. The monkey stayed here
until 1944, chirping affection
ately whenever Greenhall was
around and pouting when Mrs.
Greenhall was with him. Then
the monkey was sent back to
Miss Sullivan.
Greenhall wrote Miss Sulli
van about Susie. Her reply said
the monkey, known to her and
Greenhall as Butch had been
stolen last May and could be
dentified by a partly missing
finger. Greenhall went out to the
cage. The monkey had a finger
partly gone.
So Susie is Butch. And she'll
slay here at least until February
when Miss Sullivan plans to
visit Portland.
