Sadistic Practices of
Nazi Physicians Revealed
Chicago, Nov. 21 (U.R) Nazi physicians tried to transplant
human legs and subjected innocent victims to sterilizing doses of
X-rays, the Journal of the American Medical association reported
S1 today. An article on the bru
talities of nazi doctors declared
some of the experiments were
sadistic and were performed by
pseudo-scientists and untrained
personnel without adequate rea
son. Twenty-three nazi physicians
will go on trial December 5 at
Nuernberg, Germany, charged
with the crime of having con
ducted experiments on human
bengs resulting in innumerable
deaths.
The AMA article was based
upon a report by Dr. A. C. Ivy,
vice president of the University
of Illinois, who had been picked
to represent the association in
an investigation of these acts.
Multiple Conception Tried
An attempt was made by the
nazi physicians to increase the
rate of reproduction of the Ger
man people through multiple
ovulation and conception, the
report said.
"Indecencies c h a r a cterized
these experiments," the article
said.
"Studies were made to ascer
tain how a population could be
sterilizeo without their knowl
edge, so that the sterilization
would be accomplished without
the fact becoming available for
propaganda by enemies of the
reich.
"One method under study was
to place the dried juice of a
plant in the fobd of the popula
tion. Another was to expose
men and women to a castration
dose of X-rays while they were
filling out government forms.
"A third method consisted in
injecting the cavity of the uter
us with a sterilizing agent dur
ing the course of a routine phys
ical examination of the women
of the population."
Tried to Transplant Legs
"Attempts were made to
transplant legs and other organs
which animal experimentation
has shown to be impracticable.
In one instance, a piece of 'hair
growing skin' was transplanted
to the nose of a Jewess," the
AMA article said.
The lethal effects of poisoned
bullets were studied to deter
mine how long after a person
was shot the disease would be
come apparent, and how long it
would be before he died.
The nazi physicians shortened
arms and legs of human beings
by cutting out sections of their
bones to see how much bone
might be removed without ham
pering normal movement, the
Journal article said.
One series of murders, the ar
ticle said, was done to provide
skeletons for a museum.
Men to Spend Heavy
Dough for Cosmetics
Chicago, Nov. 21 (U.R)Men
will start spending as much
money for cosmetics as their
wives within the next five years,
three men experts on male
grooming predicted today.
W. B. Woodard, Chicago, Wil
liam Watt, New York, and Ralph
J. Kachelhoffer, Freeport. 111.,
all representatives of large cos
metics firms, said men are on
their way toward buying great
quantities of face powder, bath
powder and cologne.
They'll probably buy a lot of
powder puffs, too, the experts
predicted at the annual "spot
and spring market" of the Illi
nois Men's Apparel club.
More than $50,000,000 in
"beauty preparations" were sold
to men last year and the 1946
purchases will be even greater,
the cosmeticians said. '
"Men who used to steal their
wives' face powder after shav
ing and douse themselves with
rose-scented cologne are coming
right out in the open now and
buying cosmetics made just for
men," Woodard said.
One Strike Succeeds
Another in Alaska

tricans stayed away from work
as one strike succeeded another
The electricians left work
here and at Anchorage, they
said, because the contractor,
Birch Johnson Lytle company,
refused to meet the union's re
quirement that union men can
work for none but an electrical
contractor. This would require
the general contractor to sub
let electrical work.
Carpenters returned to work
when the company agreed to
negotiate a working agreement
on wage increases. Ben Potter,
head of the Building Trades
union, told interviewers that
the threatened termination of
housing had nothing to do with
their decision.
Newsprint May Go
Back Under Control
New York, Nov. 21 (UP)
The newsprint consumers em
ergency committee asked Presi
dent Truman today to put news
print back under price control
and th quota system, asserting
that mall quantity users of
newsprint were threatened with
suspension.
"Removal of price ceilings

tinued existence of the nation's
traditional free press," Marty
Berg, chairman of the commit
tee, said in a telegram to the
president.

home on East Center street will
present its annual Harvest tea
Friday afternoon. "Friends and
others interested are welcome to
attend and an opportunity wit'

of the home that now has a
guest list of 60 elderly men and
women. Gifts of foodstuffs will
be acceptable.
In spite of greatly increased
cost of operation, as to food,
maintenance of plant and staff
of employes, the home is in a
sound financial position. And
while additional rooms were
made available early in the year
when the last available space
in the three-story structure was
remodeled, there has been no
