Uclans Give PCC Hope Of Perfect Bowl Team San Francisco, Nov. IS U.R Coach Bert La Brucherie of UCLA's undefeated Bruins Isn't claiming; he has a "wonder team," but if his boys go to the Rose Bowl with a perfect record, it will be the first time the trick has been turned since the 1940 Stanford "wow boys" made it. Year-in and year-out the competition is so even in the Pacific Coast conference that a so-called mediocre record from a national standpoint, that is wins the bowl bid. Trojana Record University of Southern Cali fornia made the last three trips to the pot o'gold game with rec ords of 7-3 in 1945, 7-0-2 in 1944 and 7-2 in 1943. In 1942 UCLA got there with seven wins and three defeats which ties Southern California for low on a percentage basis. In (act, undefeated and un tied western representatives in the bowl are few and far between In the 32 games that have been played on New Year's day, the west has sent only eight teams with perfect records. The Bruins still have some big hurdles to clear to break in with the favored few. Saturday they meet Montana, which should be an easy step. But the following weeK tne comneution is lurnisn- , ed by the arch foe, southern California, and many times be . fore UCLA has come a cropper in mis one wnen a uuwi uia hung in the balance. After that comes Nebraska in (,an intersectional game. How ever, the latter game will have no bearing on the selection of the western representative. Other Coast Scraps While the Uclans take their hroath npflinst Montana this week, Southern California will rest its bruises scouting the Bruins in action against the Grizzlies. In other conference games, Oregon and Washington tangle in a traditional northern battle that already has sold out the 43,000 seats at Seattle; Stanford entertains Washington Slate at Palo Alto; and Oregon State in vades California at Berkeley. The Beavers with one loss and one tie in conference play are closest lo USC and UCLA in the standings. Cadet Guard Tops Nation New York, Nov. 13 W) Joe Steffy, Army guard,, smeared Notre Dame men all over the place in last Saturday's "game of the year" at the Yankee stadium. For his stellar per formance the cadet from Chat tanooga was named today as the lineman of the week in the sixth Associated Press weekly oll of the season. "Steffy was superb defen sively amongst an array of outstanding stars," was the tribute to Steffy's feats by Herman Hickman, Army line coaoh, who seldom goes over board on a player. Steffy had the stiffest kind of opposition in the balloting from Ends Alton Baldwin, of Arkansas; Neil Armstrong, Ok lahoma Aggies; Kelly Mote, Duke; and Jim Martin, Notre Dame; Tackles Ed. Champagne, Louisiana Stale and George Sul livan, Notre Dame; and Centers Chuck Bednarik, Pennsylvania; Dick Scott, Navy; Paul Duke, Georgia Tech and Bryant Meeks, South Carolina. Only West Coast player nom inated was End Paul Cleary of Southern California. Stiner, dean of Pacific Coast conference coaches, replaces O. E. Hollingbei-ry, former Washington State coach, who has retired. He will be as sisted by Homer Norton of Texas A. & M. and George Sauer of Kansas, Kerr's staff will be the same as last year Bernie Biennan of Minne sota and Beattie Feathers of North Carolina State. Players for both squads will be chosen from among star sen iors on the nation's collegiate lootball teams. i By Len urnbu1 a nii mmm wmiiiiiiii mh Athletic interest bounces back and forth at the University ol Oregon. At present the hovering cause is selection of a new football coach. An editorial published in the November issue of Old Oregon, alumni association magazine, sums up the situation in a much better manner than mice or men, much less a peering sports writer on the outside. The lengthy quote: Alternatives and Qualifications for Webfool "There are several alternatives in seeking a new pigskin men tor. One is to hire a 'name' coach, pay him a large salary and presumably start planning to spend New Year's day in the vicin ity of Pasadena, the same being the site of the Rose Bowl. An other possibility is to hire an 'unknown' whose record at a small institution would indicate success in the rugged Pacific Coast conference. A third alternative is to scour the ranks of the high schools for a young and ambitious man and give him the job. "In looking for a new tutor the following set of qualifications might be used as a guide: "1. That he be ambitious, preferably a young man, who won't be reluctant to try something new when one thing has failed. "2. He should be a good administrator, for there arc scores of details that go with the job of coaching football. "3. That he be the type of person who will be able to get along with students and alumni. "4. His personality should be such that his players will idolize him. "5. We might add that, all other things being equal, lie be a University of Oregon alum." The above, presumably written by the editor of Old Oregon, Harry Glickman, strikes true to the bone. This bone is the one of contrition that has befuddled the University of Oregon for many years. There is no need of the "coaches' graveyard" in Eugene. Now take this fellow at a small southern Oregon insti tution who has an undefeated record this year . . . and the dis cussion drifts off to other topics. City League Starts on Well-Organized Basis Look for a fast-paced basketball league this season. Regis tration of players is going on this week at Maple and Kccne sport ing goods. All indications point to a record enrollment. Only those above high school age will be accepted. There are plenty of returned veterans to fill the ranks. Once the players are set, drawings for teams will be held. Sponsors for the quintets come up next, then the league is ready for action. Special note there is a city league basketball committee meeting Wednesday night in Maple and Kcene's. Don't Be Satisfied with Just a Little Tote Board Arcadia, Calif., Nov. 11 u.R The horse players may die broke, but the city of Arcadia hopes to make the business pay plenty. First reading has been given an ordinance which would pro vide a five-cent tax on all Santa Anita park admission tickets in excess of 40 cents. Estimates put the return at nearly $100, 000 a meeting. The city already taxes the race track itself $100 a day, and is trying to collect $100 daily from operators of the tote board. Turner A magazine printed at Vilseck, Germany, "The Right of the Line," gave Lt. Hu bert K. Bones of Turner a place as one of the coaches in the First Division league. r NEW CAR The present new car scarcity will continue for manv months, due to currently insurmountable production problems.
