East Salem Home Extension Units Meeting During Month East Salem, Nov. 13 The November meetings of the Home Extension units for all East Salem women are being held at dales during the first three weeks, of this month Last Friday at 1:30 iast baiem unit met at the home of Mrs. Homer J. Conklin on Lancaster Drive. East Salem women trom the north part of the districts who attend Central Howell unit met for a postponed meeting at the home of Mrs. Frank Way on route 6. This was the only unit to have the lesson on "Keeping Well With Vitamino D." Thursday at 1 . o'clock the Lansing Neighbors unit will meet at the home of Mrs Ed. Tobin on Lansing avc enue. Lesson by project leaders on "Care of the Hair." Four Corners unit will meet next Tuesday at 1 o'clock at the home of Mrs. E. E. Walker. Les son, "Care of the Hair." The same subject will be for the lcs ' son of Edina Lane unit when it meets November 22 at 1 o'clock at the home of Mrs. F. E. Cas pell at 610 Bieber avenue. Project leaders for the East Salem unit were Mrs. E. E. Brandt and Mrs. Charles Nor ton. This lesson is best given ,' by demonstrations with some member coming to the meeting ready to have her hair sham pooed and re-set. The aims of these lessons arc to help home makers have well-groomed hair at little cost and to be more at tractive through well-groomed hair. With well prepared charts the lesson points out the impor tance of beautiful hair, the struc ture of a hair, the different types, and the proper care of the hair and scalp. Classifica tion of the types of hair arc giv- en, correct types of shampoos for both dry and oily hair, the kind of rinses to use and the ; effects of hair dyes. When mod - eling, the correct way to make ', different kinds of curls may be shown and the arrangements of J the hair on different types of i faces. ' All extension units have been i asked to send in a name for the ' new cooperative house to be i built on the Oregon State college ' campus and any voluntary con ; tributions that each unit may care to make. Mrs. Carolyn J Simmons is Marion county i building chairman. She would like each unit to have a building chairmun and the East Salem members will be appointed lat er, as no definite action was taken on this subject at the meeting. There will be no unit meetings in December but proj ect leaders will attend a train ing meeting at the YMCA in Salem on the 17th in prepara tion for the February meeting The January meeting will be on "Color in the Home" by Miss Trindle. Thursday afternoon the Mcr- Aijiy-Go-Round club of Hollywood Drive met at the home of Mrs. Harold Holler on Sunnyview avenue. Mrs. Paul Barham, the president, presided at a short business meeting. Mrs. Glenn Larkins was a special guest. There were 10 members present. The next meeting will be with Mrs. V. M. La Due. Benefit Shower Held Falls City A miscellaneous shower was given for Mrs. Ed Wilson at the IOOF hall. A fire recently burned their home and belongings. Refreshments were served by the hostesses Mrs. Fay Wilson, Mrs. Eva Powers and Mrs. Eva Burbank to 50 in vited guests. Steel man were urged today to free federal funds to carry on pro jected flood control and other programs in Oregon. The labor-management com mittee of which L. C. Stoll, em ployment service director, is chairman, prepared the plea. Stoll said Oregon unemploy ment November 1 totaled 23,000 with 18,000 of the jobless in the Portland area. Because of the housing shortage, any projects using large numbers of men should bo of the type where housing facilities are built at the site,, he said. Stoll said the committee is unanimous in supporting a pro gram designed to give employ ment as well as to increase elec trical power needed to attract new industries, to protect lives and property through flood con trol and to build and maintain highways. Col. O. E. Walsh, district army engineer, said that of some $19, 000,000 allotted to his district only $6,800,000 would be avail able unless withheld funds were released. Dr. Paul Raver, Bonneville administrator, said his agency's funds had been cut to $16,000, 000 and that no new industrial power customers could be ac cepted. He and Walsh bolh stressed need for the proposed McNary dam, and R. H. Baldock, high way commission engineer, said the stale favors a highway across the structure. Fulton Exhibit Here Thursday Opening of the winter season gets under way Thursday at the Elfstrom galleries with the one-man show by Cyrus J. Ful ton. This is the first of a series of exhibitions which promises an interesting art season. Included in the schedule fol lowing the Fulton exhibit is a one-man show by E. B. Quig ley of Portland. Next is the Oregon-California invitational which will run into January The director, "Larry" Boulier, announces the four county "Tom Thumb" exhibit scheduled for January. This is a jury show open to artists of Marion, Polk, Linn and Benton counties. Cash awards will be granted for out standing work in oil, water colors and drawings. Further information may be had at the galleries at 340 Court street. F. Loren Boulier, Salem art ist, will participate in the win ter series of art exhibits at the Camclbach galleries in Phoenix, Arizona. He has been invited to show with nationally known artists which include, Emil Ko sa, Dwight Shepler, Henry Gas ser and others. Governor and Party Fish Rogue River Grants Pass, Nov. 13 (AP) Governor Earl Snell and party of five spent from Friday to Sunday here fishing the Rogue. Included in the Snell party were James H. Cassell, Howard II. Morse, George Rotcgard, all of Portland; D. M. Skirving, Holly wood, and T. A. Neason of Tole do, Ohio. Also here over the weekend was Clark Gable who was a guest at We-Ask-U-Inn on the Rogue. Gable left this morning for Klamath Falls on a duck hunting trip. Awards Made At Achievement Program Over 50 4-H club boys and girls of Marior county received the awards for their work at an achievement program held Tuesday night at the Salem Chamber of Commerce auditorium when formal presentations were made by number of leaders in the pro motion of club work. Present were Donna Wicderk ehr, Sidney, and Bonnie Klein, Aumsville, who won the state awards which will send them to Chicago in December for na tional competition and an nouncement also was made at the meeting that James Bishop, county 4-H club leader, will be sent to accompany the girls and participate in the national con gress of 4-H clubbers. The two girls were presented by Carma lite Wcddlc, rural school su pervisor. One of the features of last night's meeting was presentation by Sheriff Denver Young of a $20 cash prize offered by him tor the most outstanding club member who did not receive a special award. Harvey Elser of Turner was recipient. Sheriff Young spoke highly of club work and its salutary effect on youth. Leo Spilzbart, state fair man ager, 'handed out fair awards and touched on the importance of that phase of fair work. L J. Allen, acting state club lead er, also spoke briefly.
