I 'Bearcat J-V's Rumple Traditional Grid Foes A football game that was entirely too close tor the comfort of the winners went to Willamette university Jayvees over Llnficld college juniors on Sweetland field Tuesday night, 14 to 7. Al though beaten, the baby Wildcats were scratching at the door of their opponents when the gun sounded. It was the second win for Coach Bunny Bennetts aggregation. The Bearcat Jayvees tallied a touchdown in the second period on John Burleigh's 15 yard pass to Ron Runyan who went the rest of the distance of 20 yards. The conversion was a pass from Cece Conner to Run yan. Ed Filzsimons' recovery of a Linfield fumble in the fourth frame gave Willamette its second scoring opportuni ty. Taking the ball on the Lin field 30 the Bearcats went on to tally with Runyan scoring on a reverse and Darrell Lewis kicked the conversion. Linfield staged a third period 60 yard drive and converted and was on the one yard line when the game ended. A block ed punt gave the visitors the ball on the Willamette 11. iWillWBWWWIWIiBlll WlillliIBi I , W Ireadmullins u m This space problem is really acute. Around 5000 words of very readable information on the coming Army-Notre Dame tussle in Yankee stadium Saturday has been tossed in the waste basket this week. More will follow. Several condensations are listed below: PAST RECORD: The series started in 1913. Notre Dame has won 22, Army 7, and three ties are recorded. Notre Dame won 26-0 in 1943. Cadets rumbled back with a 59-0 victory In 1944 and added a 48-0 trouncing in 1945. This is Coach Earl Blaik's sixth season as West Point mentor. Cadets have a win streak of 25 straight games. Frank Leahy's five year record as a head coach at Boston College and Notre Dame shows 45 victories, three ties and only five defeats. SCORING THIS YEAR: Notre Dame has piled up 177 points in 1946 while holding Illinois, Pittsburgh, Purdue, Iowa and Navy to 18. Cadets have rambled for 208 points against Villanova, Oklahoma, Cornell, Michigan, Columbia, Duke and West Vir ginia, while allowing these opponents a total of 55. Consider the opposition, and two more games played by Army, and the offen sive nod goes to the Irish, along with 'he defensive. GENERAL LINE OUTLOOK: 'Army reserves appear weak Notre Dame strong. A stubborn West Virginia eleven last week choked down the Army machine for three periods by charge and drive. Cadet guards are especially weak beyond the first string. The fast-breaking T-formation requires guards and tackles to run many miles for downfield block ing. Notre Dame strikes an average of 210 pounds per man, and reserves are kept in off-game cages too. Give a, warm day in Yankee stadium and the five team traveling squad of fighting "Skis" may hand Cadets many headaches. THE BACKFIELDS: Herschel "Ug" Fuson injured his left shoulder in the West Virginia game and will not play against Notre Dame. Glenn Davis and Doc Blanchard face the sternest test of their gridiron careers. Davis has averaged 6.2 yards per try from scrimmage this year, compared with 11.3 in 1945. Blanchard has dropped from 7.2 to 5.7. Lujack is back as field general for the Irish, and the rest are heavy and fast. Oscar Fraley, United Press sports writer, says the group counting on Blanchard and Davis overlooks two factors: "1, that Notre Dame line, and 2, the fact that six of Army's starting players are from the south how I ask you, can they win in Yankee stadium?" OSClsHost For Vandals Oregon State College, Cor vallis, Nov. 6 Home for the second weekend in a row, Ore gon State's football team will play host to the Idaho Vandals on Bell field Saturday after noon in a Pacific Coast con ference clash. Although records of both teams to date this season would establish Lon Stincr's Bcaners as favorites, the Orangemen are not taking the Vandal game lightly. The Beaver coaching staff has warned the squad that on two previous occasions, in 1937 and 1938, underdog Idaho teams defeated strong Orange outfits, 7 to 6 and 13 to 0. For some unknown reason the Vandals always play one of their best games against Ore gon State. In the long series dating back to 1913 the Beavers have won 14 games with the Moscow club coming out on top five times with no lies. The longest punt return so far in 1946 has been that of George Wamsley of Rice who returned a Southwestern of Texas kick 90 yards. if pr i f The HEEDD IS OPENING WEDNESDAY NIGHT, NOVEMBER 6 UNDER NEW MANAGEMENT Specializing in Home Style Pan Fried Chicken 1 Mile South of Salem on Highway 99E Open from 5:00 lo 12:00 Manager William E. No tre Dame whipped Army 26-0 that year and went on to estab lish a national collegiate record for toial offense a mark Army erased in 1944 and again in 1945. Irish Take First Notre Dame, second in tolal offense last week, supplants the leader for three weeks straight, Utah university, which wound up in fourth place this week. The Leahymcn also top the national standings in rushing, having run up 1520 yards on 280 running plays for an av erage of 304 yards per game. Utah also ranks send In this department with a 301.8 aver age. In comparison to Notre Dame's almost consistent per formance, Army started slowly in grinding out ground and aer ial gains and has been improv ing its standing each week. On Rushing On rushing offense, Army moved from 14th last week to eighth this week, having gained 1727 yards on 326 running plays for an average of 246.7 per game. The figures show Noire Dame has averaged 5.8 yards per play in the last five games .while Army's percentage is 6.5. Boston College made the greatest jump, from ninth last week to second in total offense and from 11th to second in passing offense. The Eagles completed 21 of 33 passes against New York university Saturday for 384 yards and five touchdowns a new college high. Nevada clung to the lead in passing offense for the fourth straight week. In six games, Nevada has completed 50 of 114 attempted forwards for 1152 yards or an average of 192 yards per game. The statistics bureau rates pass ing teams on the average yardage rather than the num ber or percentage of comple tions. Nevada also leads the nation in punting with an average of 44.1 yards per kick on 21 punts. Man Who Knows Most Says Army Mnle Weak South Bend, Ind., Nov. 6 W) The round man wandering around the Notre Dame campus this week and holding long hush-hush huddles with the Irish coaching .staff is JacR Lavclle, who knows more about the Army than your draft board does. Round Jack is Noire Dame's top scout in charge of finding out what makes the Cadets cave the roof in on other ball clubs. In this cloak-and-dagger capa city, the cherubic "Sy" who hails from New York, has sat in on every minute of every one of Army's 25 straight wins over the past three years, and lie still shudders at the way "that Davis hurts you and that Blan chard murders you." At the same time. Jack thinks the Irish have it this year, and while he agrees the Army figures to win on speed and experience, he gives bis Alma Mammy its best chance in three years to do the trick Saturday in New York. Actually, he predicted a 7-7 tie for a local newspaper, which of course won't get him into trouble. "Armyhasweakncsses," he tips you off. "We know what they are. What's more, we have two good lines we can throw at their one." Commercial St. Wednesday, Nov. (!, 1916- Harris the shoulder of Stanley (Bucky) Harris, a reported S35,000-a-year ex-boy wonder who has returned to the playing field from the executive ranks. Harris admitted yesterday, when his new job was formally announced by President Larry MacPhai!. that he was interested in a first baseman, a catcher, some pitchers and another out fielder. How far reaching the player turnover may he depends on the number of deals that can be arranged by MacThall, but both the new manager and club president have made it emphatic that Joe Di Maggio is to remain with the Yan kees. Ted Williams is not under consideration, according to Mac Phail. A look at Harris' past record would indicate that some of the "sacred cows" in the Yankee barn may not be immune to sale or trade. One of Bucky's first moves after his first year in Detroit was the sale ot Harry Hcilmann to Cincinnati, a tran saction for which many Tiger fans never quite forgave the new skipper. Nick Etten definitely is on the block, for Harris has said that his lineup needs are flex ible to the extent that Tommy Henrich can be used either at first or right field. That would add up lo a trade of Etten for a fly chaser if suitable mate rial was available.
