Aluminum Kcfrigcrator Car Completion of fin experimental
aluminum refrigerator car built in the shops of the Pacific Fruit
Express company, is announced by P.F.E. joint owners, South
ern Pacific and Union Pacific railroads. It will be tested with
loads of perishable crops to determine its practicability and en
durance under severest conditions. The car weighs about five
tons less than prewar refrigerator cars although retaining stand
ard dimension, and steel load-bearing parts.

ly active opening. Losses of
fractions to around 3 points pre

Chicago, Oct. 28 (.T) Wheat
and oats wore strong in today's
grain futures trading. Inability
ot cash traders to purchase more
than small amounts of wheat
and oats in the country together
with light receipts at terminals
was reflected in the futures
trading.
Corn, which was well under
Saturday's close at times, gained
strength in sympathy with
wheat and oats, the nearby con
tract showing greatest gains.
At the finish wheat was li
to 2 cents higher than Satur
day's close, January 2.04. Corn
was U to lower. January
$1.35 -',4. Oats were ,i to
iVs higher, November 84 '.i -lis.
Barley was unchanged, Novem
ber $1.36',2.

The agreement with the AFL
union provides a 15 percent
wage increase and preferential
hiring for union members.
The basic monthly wage on
Liberty ships now will be $581
for masters and $265 for fourth
males as compared to the pre
vious $505 and $230. The union
had asked a wage hike of 30
percent.
The CIO Marine Engineers'
Beneficial association previous
ly had reached an agreement
with cast and gulf coast opera
tions. Terms were not divulged
but union spokesmen said they
got a 15 percent pay boost. They
asked 35 percent.
Coast Negotiations
San Francisco, Oct. 28 UP)
Negotiations for settlement of
the four-wcek-old maritime
strike on the Pacific coast will
be resumed at 3 p.m., today
amid encouraging signs arising
from the agreements ending the
tie-up on the Atlantic seaboard.
A conditional offer to end
the west coast strike was made
over the week-end by Harry
Bridges, president of the Inter
national Longshoremen's and
Warehousemen's union (CIO)
and co-chairman of the commit
tee for maritime unity.
He said he would call off the
strike it employers would agree
to submit to negotiation the is
sue of a separate contract cov
ering work on 16 coastwise lum
ber schooners, and accept the
east and gulf coast agreement
for marine engineers.

Job Training
On-the-job training is now
being taken by approximately
8,000 veterans of World War II
according to recent statistics re
leased by Gov. Earl Snell. Vet
erans' administration figures
show about 7,300 receiving sub
sistence allowances under the
program, while figures of the
state division of vocational edu
cation show approximately 1,
000 more in "status pending,"
awaiting VA approval.
A report by O I. Paulson, di
rector of the division of voca
tional education, shows that des
pite recent limitations on job
income ceilings under the pro
gram more veterans are signing
for the training than cancelling.
The state now has 34 local
supervisors, registering the vet
erans and supervising their
training, with their salaries paid
jointly by local school districts
and the division of vocational
education. Eight were recently
added following appropriation
of additional funds by the state
emergency board.
