Hop Picking at
Independence
Independence The picking of
the early varieties of hops in the
Independence area is in full
swing. While a couple thousand
pickers could be absorbed in the
various yards scattered through
out the district to good advant
age, picking is progressing sat
isfactorily. Growers are paying $3.50 per
hundred pounds in all yards,
and pickers are making an aver
age of $5 to $7 a day. Several
eighth grade students reported
making $4.50 the first day of
picking on August 19. The early
clusters and fuggles are lighter
in weight than the late varieties
which means pickers will make
a better average in the late har
vest from September 1 to 15.
The crop this year is said to be
much better than average, and
a report by the U.S. department
of agriculture predicts that pros
pects were for a record-breaking
crop of 58 million pounds. This
will be an increase of four per
cent over the 1945 record and
48 percent above the 1935-44
average.
The Independence Hop Grow
ers at 148 C street will sign up
anyone interested in working in
the harvest.
Albany Youfhs Held
For Stripping Aulo
Albany State Police Officer
Wayne Huffman Tuesday swore
out complaints charging Charles
D. McLaren, 16, and Forest M.
Pool, 19, with larceny involv
ing the alleged theft of acces
sories from an automobile which
they are accused of stripping af
ter the car had been abandoned
on the Pacific highway three
miles north of Shedd.
Taken from the abandoned
car were the radio, floor mat
and almost everything that
could be detached, Officer Huff
man said. All of the stolen ar
ticles were recovered at the spot
as Officer Huffman was en route
to Shedd to investigate the re
port that the car owned by
Lloyd Vincent, Jefferson, and
believed stolen Sunday by Jun
ior Richardson, escaped con
vict, had been found at Shedd.
The car is registered to Carl
J. Brown, Portland. It had a
flat tire and had been at the
roadside since Thursday.
The Vincent car was found
in Shedd. It is being searched
for fingerprints.
Stocks Advance
Irregularly
New York, Aug. 21 UP)
Stocks worked the recovery
side of the market in today's
early proceedings but finally
ran into selling which cut ad
vances substantially and put
numerous leaders in the losing
ranks.
Dealings, slow most of the
time, picked up activity in the
last half hour as quotations for
steels and motors wilted. A few
"thin" issues added several
points on meager transactions.
Assorted special stocks retained
modest gains at the close al
though losses of 1 to 4 points or
so were widespread. Transfers
of around 800,000 shares were
the best in a week.
Improved were Consolidated
Edison, Chesapeake & Ohio,
Keystone Steel, American Su
matra Tobacco, South Puerto
Rico Sugar, Standard Oil (N.
J.), Johns-Manville and Air Re
duction. Bonds were narrow.
Corn and Oats
Futures Decline
Chicago, Aug. 21 (U.PJBoth
corn and oats futures on the
board of trade today declined
beneath openings which were
weak for corn prices and frac
tionally lower for oats. Some
of the selling appeared to be
lieve that restoration of price
ceilings on livestock would, in
the long run, have an unfavor
able influence on grain. Only
barley took a strong tone.
Corn closed off 3 to 4 V ;
oats finished the session off M
to 1; barley finished up Vs
to 1.
Corn futures, after a weak
opening, met fairly active pro
fessional buying and rallied
throughout most of the session
until toward the closing bell
when interest dropped off. Some
of the selling which did de
velop in corn was believed to
have been induced by expecta
tions of a further upward re
vision in corn crop prospects.

Shortage of Cars
Halts Road Paving
With about 21 miles of the
28 mile county building road
program completed, the balance
of seven miles is threatened
with having to go over into
another year with telegraphic
advices from the California oil
company which has been furn
ishing asphalt that further as
phalt deliveries are being held
up indefinitely because of a
car tie-up in Northern Califor
nia. County Commissioner Rice
said the work would await to
morrow night, arid if there is
no oil in sight then the balance
of the program will be aban
doned and the equipment sent
into the shops to be put in con
dition for storage for the win
ter. He said the equipment can
not wait an indefinite time for
arrival of oil and the telegram
gave no hope of any early al

said about six more cars are
needed to finish the work

Land Bought for
Garbage Dump
The county court Wednesday
morning in a conference with
G. C. Baker, owner of 12 acres
of land north of Woodburn, vir
tually completed negotiations
for its purchase for $2500, the
land to be used for a garbage
disposal dump for the towns in
the north end of the county.
This is outgrowth of hearings
held several months ago when
the county virtually committed
itself to assist cities and towns
of the county to solve their
garbage disposal problems, city
officials from Woodburn stat
ing that their situation had be
come serious and other towns
also asked for help.
County Judge Murphy stated
that while the maintenance and
operation costs of the dump will
be on a 50-50 basis it was be
lieved by the court to be pref
erable that the county itself ac
quire the land by purchase so
if at any time in the future it
is abandoned for the uses for
which it has been bought it can
be disposed of without any com
plications such as would arise if
the cities and towns went in on
a joint ownership proposition.
He stated that the tract is
adjacent to a good gravel road,
with a road leading into it that
can be converted into a county
road and thus be property main
tained. The county will pay 50
per cent of the operating and
maintenance expense, the other
50 per cent being prorated
among the cities and town us
ing the disposal plant, accord
ing to its use. The tract is about
two and a half miles from
Woodburn, which will be the
heaviest user, about five miles
from Gervais and 10 miles from
Aurora. Expenses will include
cost of road and maintenance,
cost of a caretaker and rental of
county equipment for putting
and keeping the place in shape.
Revenues also will come from
that and it is expected there will
be revenues from commercial
garbage handlers,

Poland's Crops Short
400,000 Tons
Warsaw, Aug. 21 (IP) UNRRA
officials in Poland prepared a
report today for Director Gen
eral F. H. LaGuardia asserting
that Poland's probable harvest
would be at least 400,000 tons
short in bread grains needed to
supply the country until the
next crop.
M. E. Hays of Drexel Hill, Pa.,
in charge of the agricultural re
habilitation of UNRRA, said
crops were cut radically by lack
of proper seed and fertilizers;
field mice and hail storms.
Reich Food Rations
Raised in Winter
London, Aug. 21 (P) John B.

coming winter, "whatever the
cost."
Hynd, as chancellor of the
duchy of Lancaster, is the Att
lee cabinet minister responsible
