stock market but, while the
averages advanced a shade for
the seventh straight session,
many leaders acted a bit fatigu
ed. Transfers were in the
neighborhood of 900,000 shares.
N. Y. & Harlem, an odd-lot
issue, made one of its infrequent
appearances on the ticker tape
and was up 23 points at 310 on a
few shares. Pond Creek com
mon enjoyed a bulge following
a lifted quarterly and split-up
proposal. Better performers
were Sunshine Mining. Cerro
De Pasco. Kennecott, Interna
tional Harvester, Hiram Walk
er, Southern Railway. Chesa
peake & Ohio, Great Northern
Railway and Montgomery
Ward. Backward were Bethle
hem, General Motors, American
Telephone and Johns-Manville.
Bonds were irregularly im
proved. Closing Dow-Jones averages:
industrial, 202.26. up 0.70. rail,
62.30, up 0.44; utility, 41.54, up
0.22; 6o stocks, 74.85, up 0.33.
Sales totaled 830,000 shares

yesterday. Curb volume was
220,000 shares against 300,000

and slackening buying interest
drove corn and oats prices down
from early substantial gains to
close lower on the board of
trade today.
Corn finished 1U-2 cents
lower and oats off except
for September, unchanged to up
s. Barley finished the day
',' cent higher on all deliveries.
Early corn prices were up
better than three cents but the
pit took a steady downturn as
buyers backed off. Prospects
of rain in some parts of the
main belt and a 10-ccnt reces
sion at Buenos Aires aided the
decline.
Oats followed (he corn pit to
lower levels on some profit tak
ing and weakness in cotton.
Pressure from the selling side
was persistent but trading
quieted down later in the ses
sion. No sales were reported in the
cash wheat or corn market but
bids held about steady. Cash
oats also were stepdy with No.
1 heavy white selling at 78 li
79 cents.
Purchase of corn from the
country on a to-arrive basis
were placed at 120.000 bushels
and shipping sales of oats total
ed about the same. The com
modity credit corporation was
reported still in the market.

olis traded off the five cent
limit and the September option
dropped better than two cents.

Hearing Wante
A majority of growers attend
ing the recent Marion county
prune growers meeting at Sa
lem have requested a prune har
vest wage hearing before the
federal wage stabilization board,
according to D. L. Rasmussen,
assistant county agent. Frank
Ncufeld. president of the Polk
County Prune Growers associa
tion, attended the meeting and
indicated that most Polk coun
ty prune growers were interest
ed in a joint Polk-Marion coun
ty wage hearing. Further details
will be published whenever the
time and place is set for the
hearing.
The 60 growers attending saw
motion pictures and slides of
homemade mechanical prune
shakers exhibited by M, G. Hu
ber, extension agricultural en
gineer at Oregon State college.
Huber stated that all shakers
observed during the 1945 season
were of either cable or boom
type design operated either
from a power take-off or from
direct power. Best results were
obtained by using track layer
tractors, the design of which
kept the tractor from slipping
after the brakes were set. Rub
bertired tractors were less ef
ficient because they slipped too
easily while the prune trees
were being shaken. All models
discussed were reported as
greatly reducing labor costs as
compared to hand shaking.
S. C. Jones, associate entomo
logist at Oregon Stale, reported
very favorable results from
prune thrip control experiments
conducted by entomologists of
the Oregon Experiment station.

off from LaGuardia field at
10:54:34 a. m. (EDT) today in
an attempt to establish a new
cast-west speed record between
New York and Burbank, Calif.

of the National Arconautic As
sociation, clocked the takeoff,
which started a flight aimed at
bettering the present east-west
record of 9 hours, 13 minutes
and 14 seconds, now held by a
navy patrol bomber.
Grtibaugh. whose home is at
Van Wert, Ohio, said he and his
crew of six would try to make
the flight in about 7 hours,
30 minutes. An unusual army
authorization was required to
permit the flight takeoff.
Crew members include Lt.
Elbert E. Shearer, Zillah, Wash.,
flight engineer.

accelerated others, the wcathci
bureau's weekly crop-weather
report indicated today.
Summarizing observer's notes
the report said ripening of
grains was accelerated and ma
turity of apricots and cane fruits
was hastened, leading to ex
tremefy short seasons for them.
Fruit and nuts suffered some
damage, principally sunburn to
pears, apples and walnuts; some
range poultry died where there
was insufficient shade; truck
crops suffered mild wilt in some
sections; and pastures and rang
es were set back by drying and
burning.
The past week, however, has
enabled some recovery, princip
ally of the truck crops and,
while ranges remain dry, ample
feed is reported.
