ment hospitals throughout the

pies that will be sold on the
streets of Salem Friday and Sat
urday, May 24-25, by the Mar
lon and Meadowlark posts of
the Veterans of Foreign Wars,
according to Co-chairman Jack
Chase and Bill Wieprecht.
This year will mark the 25th
anniversary sale of the red me
morial flowers for the benefit
of disabled veterans and their
dependents. The sale is a non
profit undertaking with the pro
ceeds going to the care and wel
fare of veterans and service
men and their wives and chil
dren. The direct sales of the pop
pies this week-end wlil be han
dled by the auxiliary members

Latest 'developments in' the
lumber scene were:
1. At Portland, Ore., the In
ternational Woodworkers of
America, CIO, was to resume
negotiations with operators for
a 12 Vs -cent hourly wage boost.
2. The strike of 37,000 mem
bers of the Canadian Interna
tional Woodworkers of America,
CIO, moved into its eighth day
with no appreciable change. A
union spokesman said 33 small
firms employing about 1,000
men had met the union's de
mands. 3. In Victoria, B. C, it was re
ported that the provincial gov
ernment may announce a settle
ment proposal later this week.
The government reportedly was
considering appointing a region
al board to set hours and wages
for the Canadian lumber indus
try or appointing a mediator
whose -decision would be bind
ing. 4. The Seattle Daily Times
announced a reduction in the
size of its paper during the
emergency, with advertising
bearing the brunt of 4he cut.
The Richmond, Calif., Indepen
dent will reduce the size of its
edition from 22 pags to 12 ef
fective this week. Display ad
vertising space was cut 75 percent.
Platinum is among the chem
ical elements that were not dis
covered until the 16th century.
