Will Bomb Observers Sit?

Washington, March 21 (U.R) This to notify my esteemed em
ployers that it Ihey have any notions about shipping me to Bikini
atoll in the otherwise merry month of May to watch a certain
fireworks display, I wish they d
reconsider.
I have come to the conclusion,
like Sen. Harry Byrd of Vir
ginia, that these atoms are dan
gerous. I differ from the sen-,
ator only in that I am a timid
fellow. I am no hero. I like it
here.
Couldn't we, my masters, al
low the gentleman from Virginia
to do my observing of the big
- bang and the radioactive tidal
- wave, 100 feet high, engulfing
' (he warships that cost $450,000,-
000? That is, unless he also loses
his nerve?
He's a Brave Man
The senator is a brave man. I
know that for a fact. But if ever
a proceedings was designed to
give a fellow cold feet, it was the
appearance of Vice Admiral W.
H. P. Blandy before the naval
affairs committee. What he
wanted was permission to sink
all those boals or at least risk
them. (All right, admiral, ships).

Salem travelers will benefit
by a new train to California
which will sharply shorten the
schedule of all passenger trains
between Portland, San Francis
co and Los Angeles, J. A. Or
mandy, general passenger agent
of the Southern Pacific, an
nounced Wednesday.
The Cascade will be re-established
as. an all-Pullman train
with lounge car and other pre
war facilities, while the Beaver
"Twenty miles?" asked Sen.
Eastland.
"Yes, but in a safe direction,"
the admiral replied.
This should have been re
assuring, but I did not notice

math will leave Portland at 8:15
a.m. and arrive in San Francisco
at 7:50 a.m., providing direct
connections with the daylight

Oregon apparently is not

The Oregonian will leave
Porlland at 10 p.m., arriving in
San Francisco at 7:20 p.m. with
evening connections for the
south. The "West Coast" will
leave Portland at 10:15 p.m.,
instead of 7 p.m., arriving in
Los Angeles at 8:45 a.m. Com
ing north the West Coast will
leave Los Angeles at 8:10 p.m.,
arriving in Portland at 7:40 a.m.
The Oregonian will leave San
Francisco at 6 p.m., arriving in
Portland at 3:40 p.m. and the
Klamath will leave San Fran
cisco at 8:30 p.m., arriving in
Portland at 9:25 p.m.

tion in areas where there are
no county libraries, is entirely
dependent upon the state lib
rary and book lending stores
for reading material other than
magazines, newspapers and cat
alogues, Miss Stephens said.
These facts, the librarian be-
lieves, are good arguments for
increasing the number and ca
pacity of public libraries.
Public libraries in Oregon '
have shown considerable growth
in the last few years, she re
ported. More than 1,570,698
volumes are now on public lib
rary shelves. More than 326,
392 persons have library cards.
Last year library circulation
reached the 4,441,392 mark..

The room-at-a-time method of spring
housecleaning leaves most of the house
livable during housecleaning and it helps

room a week, then the whole job isn't so

HERE'S HOW I DO IT t
. . . Dismantle the room by removing
knickknacks, pictures, draperies, cur
tains, window shades, rugs, and smaller
pieces of furniture.
. . . Move the larger pieces of furniture to
the center of the floor and cover with
shcels.
. . . Start at the ceiling and work down,
cleaning walls, woodwork, and windows
in that order.
. . . Clean furniture, then the floors and
nigs.
. . . Clean blinds, wash curtains, clean
pictures and small furniture. Be sure to
cover every inch of exposed space with
some sort of cleaner.
. . . Clean mirrors and picture glass with
window cleaner. Use soap and water on
knickknacks wherever possible.
. . . Reassemble the room and move to the
next one. In no time the entire house is
spick-and-span.
