discussed. Today the Junior Red
Cross, first-aid division, life
saving, work, and nutrition de
partment are featured.
Junior Red Cross members in
I Marion county have made 31,217
I articles from the start of 1942
I until the close of 1945, the past
I year's report showing 6,705
I articles. Junior Red Cross is an
I enrollment of service, not of
Imoney-raising. It is an educa
tional program, open to all
"school children, from the grades
rim through senior high school,
lit is a means of acquainting
'young people with Red Cross
;nd its program of service, so
jthat when they become adult
leaders they know. "what Red
; Cross is all about."

! for the school youngsters to give
(community service. This past
I year Junior Red Cross members
have supplied and sent out many
'educational boxes for children
in other countries, these boxes
. Including not only educational
i items, but such things as bars
it of soap or other such simple
, necessities that are hard to ob
V tain in the war-torn countries.
Also, the Junior Red Cross here
iupplied hundreds of Christmas
pards for the men at the U. S.
naval hospital, Corvallis, the
patients thus being supplied
frwith cards to send to their fam
ilies and friends. Right now, one

A standing program promoted
by Red Cross is that for first
,aid, water-safety, life saving and
accident pevention.
Volunteers Certified
Through 1942, 1943, 1944 and
1945, a total of 7075 persons
were certified in first-aid by
this chapter, the report showing
also that 87 volunteer instruc
tors were certified and 21 first
aid squads organized. Mrs. Gor
don Black headed this work
through much of the war period,
and Wayne Kuhl is the present
first-aid chairman, serving the
past year.
Up to the end of 1945, through
four years, 710 persons were
certified here in life-saving, the
report reveals. Hollis Hunting

history the organization was ex
tended into the United States where, from coast to
coast, it now maintains a highly efficient branch office

$3,390,372,327. The Company's financial strength
and high standard of service are indeed worthy of the
finest traditions of a great time-honored enterprise.

Lumberman Dies
At Roseburg Home

Charles E. Miller, 54, head of
the Youngs Bay Lumber com
pany, died at his family home
here Tuesday night.
Miller, a prominent northwest
lumberman, for many years was
associated with the Kingsley in
terests in the West Oregon mill
at Linnton, near Portland. Later
he moved to Gearhart and or
ganized the Youngs Bay Lumber
company at Warrenton. Later
the mill was moved to Roseburg,
where it now operates the de
fense plants agency sawmill.
Miller also organized Stebco,
Inc., which built a large mill in
Vancouver, Wash.
