Chapter 20
Tom Winslow had never been
a man who talked a great deal,
but tonight he was so glad to
sec his daughter that he kept
up a running fire ol chatter all
the way out to the farm.
"Your mother and I have
been hoping you'd come soon,"
he said, his big brown hands
deftly maneuvering the car
around a curve. "It's pretty
lonesome with you and Frances
and Tommy all gone. Remem
ber the lively times we had
when you were all at home?"
"Indeed I do every one of
them. And I would come oftcn
cr, but you know how scarce
help is and Mr. Far ham really
needs me."
"Yes, I know. It's really a
problem getting help on the
farm. Your mother even want
ed to work in the fields but that
is something I will not permit.
She's got enough to do in the
house."
"Mother's well, isn't she?"
"Yes, but sometimes, Anne,
I see a look about her that
bothers me. It's worry about
what'll happen to Tommy now.
I guess. I tell her that If he
would enme through Saipan
without a scratch he'll make
his way back home. If the
worst comes to the worst, he
can always work on the farm."
"1 had a letter from Tommy
Just the other day," Anne said.
"He writes the craziest things.
Do you have any idea where he
Is now?"
"No, that's what worries us.
but I guess he'll be restless for
a while longer but he'll set
tle down again."

up all the happy memories of
childhood and young girlhood.
Here she knew she could al
ways find sanctuary from any
troubles that might befall her.
Her mother was waiting on
the porch to wrap Anne warm
ly in a fervent embrace. "I
was so afraid you wouldn't
come, Anne! I ve saved your
supper. You haven t had any
have you?"
"No, and I'm starving!" Anne
knew that was what her mother
was hoping she would say. She
was the kind of woman who de
lighted in feeding people and
her fame as a cook was wide
spread. Now she led the way
into the big, old-fashioned kitch
en, modernized now with elec
tric lights, running water and
inlaid linoleum. Anne exclaim
ed over a new washing machine
in the corner.
"Mother! How wonderful for
you! Why, you'll be getting
downright lazy with all these
conveniences!"
Her mother sniffed. "Taking
enre of these things uses up
about as much time as doing
the work the hard way!" she re
torted, but Anne knew she was
bursting with pride over her
new possessions.
Jessie Winslow set out cold
chicken, home-made bread, milk
that was half cream and apple
pie wilh a big blob of whip
ped cream on it.
"Heavens!" Anne exclaimed,
reaching for the food with relish.
Her mother's eyes had light
ed on the ring on Anne's fin
ger. "Anne!" she cried excited
ly, "What's this?"
"Well, 1 . . . "
"Tom, come here quick!
Something's happened to Anne."
Her father came in quickly
from putting away the car, his
face showing alarm at his wife's
words. Anne laughed. "There's
nothing the matter, father. But
sit down and I'll tell you both
all about it."
And she told them all about
Wayne. When she had finished
her father said, "All we want
to be sure of, Anne, is your hap
piness. If you think this boy
can give it to you, that's all we
ask."
"I'm sure he can. father."
"Why didn't you bring him
up before he left?" her mother
wanted to know. "We would
have liked to get acquainted
with him at least."
"Wayne is just about as easy
lo lie down to anything definite
as Tommy is," Anne answered.
"You know how that is and
there was so little lime after we
decided we loved each other."
A shadow crossed Mrs. Wins
low's face at mention of Tonv
my, but she said quietly, "And
you didn't even write us about
it."
"I knew I was coming home
soon and thought it would be
much better to tell it in person."
"Then when will the wedding
be?" her father asked. "You've
got lo at least give me enough
notice so I can get a new shirt
and tie."
"I'm not exactly sure when
Wayne can get leave," Anne ex
plained, "but I'll guarantee not
to make a move without letting
you know. You know perfectly
well I wouldn't think of getting
married without you two being
there!"
Later when Anne was up
stairs in the room she and Fran
ces had shared through their
girlhood, it was almost like she
had never been away. She
thought of all the times she had
stood before the dressing table
there and dressed to go to par
tics. She remembered some of
the boys who had escorted her.
She supposed most of them were
in the service now. How many
times she had thought herself
to be in love and had thrilled
with expectancy in this very
room, trembling for fear that
the adored one would not find
her attractive. She smiled in
remembrance.
"Is anything real, after all?"
she wondered. "Is anything
permanent? Or will life as I
know it now one day seem as
vague and dim as those other
days do now? Isn't there any
thing lo really tie on to?"
She remembered, then, her
father's steadiness, his strong
hands on the wheel of the car.
Her mother's bravery, using a
fine display of interest in her
new appliances to mask the
worry in her heart over her
son's future. She thought of
her mother and father's quiet
dependence on each other
throughout the years, their de
votion to the making of a home.
Into her mind, too, came a
vision of Catherine Lowell,
whose gaiety covered the tor
tures of her illness; of Eve,
making a new life for herself
out of the ashes of the old one.
"Those are the people who
will keep this old world stea
dy," she thought, and drifting
off Into slumber she thought of
the three laughing sailors on
the bus and of Wayne and
her love for him and in
evitably of John Lowell and
the turmoil he had aroused in
her heart. But the whispering
leaves of the old beech tree
outside her window were a
soothing potion that merged all
these thoughts into dimness and
lifted her into the world of
sleep.
