    Americans Told
To Keep Faith
Seattle, Aug. 21 Mi A plea
to the American people to "keep
faith" with loyal Japanese
American soldiers who fought
on the battlefields of Italy and
France was voiced Monday by
Capt. Thomas E. Crowley, com
mander of a company of Nisei
soldiers which became one of
the most decorated units in the
history of the United States
army.
"Their heroism became a hab
it," said Captain Crowley of the
men of his 442nd battalion, "but
they are quite disheartened be
cause their families are some
times not received well at
home."
"The thought they were fight
ing for the principles of equality
and justice at home as well as
abroad," he said. "I did not
see any difference in the color
of the blood of those Japanese
American soldiers and other
soldiers as it flowed and mixed
on the battlefiends. And the
blood flowed, too, because out of
a combat team of 5000, there
were 3000 casualties.
"Their hardest fight of the
entire war," he continued,
"came in France. They rescued
the lost Texas battalion in the
Vosges mountains. The 141st in
fantry was completely cut off
and surrounded, and the Nisei
men were assigned to get them
out.
"They did get them out. They
fought magnificently. And when
the figures were added up, there
were three casualties among
these Japanese-American boys
for every soldier rescued.
"I want everyone to know
that the Japanese-Americans
formed the finest combat unil
in the army," he declared. "I
hope the American people will
keep faith with them."
Captain Crowley came to Se
attle yesterday from his home in
Madison, Wis., where he arrived
in July from overseas duty.

Meat for a Man
for a Week
Here b a typical week's supply of meat served to patients of the
Convalescent Hospital of the Army Air Forces at San Antonio
one of 12 such hospitals In the United States. Meat is served
three times a day. The week's assortment shown above includes
fresh pork, beef, lamb, ham, bacon, Mer,lranlciurteraandcoldcuta.
Whllt receiving heat therapy,' Pfc. Delbert Scott, Dover,
Delaware, moves in on a lunch built around country fried
steak and gravy. A protein-rich diet ( which call for a lot
of meat) help speed recovery from injuries.
Our men in convalescent hospitals are being
rebuilt to health with a speed never known
before. An excellent example of this is the far
sighted program of the Personnel Distribution
Command of the Army Air Forces headed by
Major General Ralph Royce.
One way the recovery of these men is has
tened is by feeding them generous quantities of
meat containing the protein substances (amino
acids) to make up for the protein they have lost.
When the body loses protein excessively (as In
wounds, severe burns and infections) or when the
diet does not provide enough protein (as with
starved prisoners) the body literally "eats Itself."
Meat proteins contain all ten of the essential
amino acids needed to maintain and rebuild the
body.
This emphasizes anew the lightness of our age
old liking for meat.
