Capital Journal, 552 Mission St., San Francisto, 5, California. . DOROTHY BURGESS Af,IM. Chapter 30 . "Yeh," sighed Mario, "like old home week," as she patted her own shoulder. Just then they heard a knock on the door. "Mr. Chamberlain is waiting for you, Miss Drew," called the tage manager. Madge looked thoughtfully after her. "It'i funny. Uncle Louie, but I actually like Mario Drew." "So do I," he chuckled. Then he turned businesslike as he took Madge'i empty glass out of her hand, rinsed It, and care fully, ever so carefully, emptied Into It the contents of the two vials. His eyes twinkled as he handed the glass back to her. "With my compliments." Madge looked angelic as she raised the glass to her lips; even Uncle Louie looked angelic ns he watched her drain the glass of its last precious drop. Madge was surprised. "11 has delightful flavor!" "And why shouldn't it?" he said tenderly, "when it is made out of nothing but hopes and dreams?" "I want to go home!" cried Madge softly. "1 want to go home to John!" Madge and Uncle Louie tip toed into Winston Manor's great hall. "I want lo freshen up a bit before 1 see John," whispered Madge. "And I," whispered Uncle Louie, "am very anxious to get started on my new formula." Madge stared at him in am azement. "What, another?" she asked. "And this one, my dear," he whispered confidentially, "is going to prove, by far, more startling and revolutionary." "Uncle Louie," she said, as he was leaving, "thank you again for ail you have done." Then she kissed him on his fore head. Madge felt suddenly weary as she walked down the hall to her bedroom. And when she entered the room, her bed be came too tempting. I'll lie down for just a few minutes, she thought, it will refresh me, and then I'll find John and tell him the wonderful news. The moment Madge's golden hair touched the pillow she was sound asleep. The eventful, exciting day had proven too ex hausting. Madge was shocked out of her sleep by a terrific explosion. She sat up, bolt-like, scream ing. "Uncle Louie! Uncle Louie!" She became more excited when she saw, in the semi-lighted room, two figures standing by her bed. "Thank God, Fred," she heard John say to the doctor, "she's snapped out of it!" "I have to help Uncle Louie!" she said, as she started to arise from the bed, but the gentle hand of the doctor restrained her. "Take It easy Madge," he said. "But, darling," said John, "Uncle Louie has been dead for over forty years!" "Madge," said the doctor quietly, "you've been dreaming. That explosion was a clap of thunder." Then, as though the electrical storm which raged outside wanted to prove the doc tor's point, there was another terrifying clap of thunder which shook the very founda tion of the house. "Oh!" wept Madge, as though her heart would break, "poor, darling Uncle Louie has been blown back into the family closet!" Madge was living too much in her dream to notice that she was still wearing the azure blue dinner gown and John's Great Grandmother Dee's set of charming garnets that she had donned in celebration of her twelfth wedding anniversary. "Darling," said John to the tearful Madge, "try to forget your dream." "I can't," she wailed. ( "Uncle Louie was so good to me. He helped me win you back frorh Mario Drew." "Darling," said John, "I hate to disillusion you or belittle Uncle Louie, but nothing has been going on between Mario Drew and myself." "But," stared Madge, "that article I read at the dinner ta ble." "Gossip columnists are al ways making mistakes and, be fore they have a chance to con tradict themselves, they stir up unnecessary situations such as tonight's." John took her hand, "So help me, darling, I don't even know Mario Drew." "What?" gasped Madge. "John is telling the truth, Madge," said the doctor quietly. "He showed me the news Item that caused you to faint." But Madge still could not believe it, as she asked. "You don't even know Mario Drew?" "No, darling." Now, instead of John's true statement mak ing Madge happy, it made her cry all the harder. "Oh," she wept, like a child. "Uncle Louie and I worked so hard to save you!" John raised her tear-stained face and smiled. "Dearest, you are going to forget you ever had a dream, and do you know why?" "No," she sniffled. "Because," he smiled,. "Fred has some, wonderful news for you." Madge wept more copiously. "And I," she wailed, thinking of Uncle Louie's miraculous formula of pink and blue, "had some wonderful news for you, but now " she hesitated, then cried out wretchedly, "Oh! If only dreams could come true!" "Madge." said the doctor quietly, "you are going to have a baby." "What?" she gasped. "I am going to have a baby?" "Yes," said John in adoration. "Oh, no!" said Madge. "Oh, yes!" said the doctor. "But you are both wrong," insisted Madge. Her face melt ed into a soft smile and her violet-blue eyes became dreamy. Then she spoke slowly, cherish ing her every word. "I am not going to have a baby I am going to have twins!" "Twins!" gasped John. "How do you know?" asked the doctor. "I told you Uncle Louie was genius!" And to this very day, John and Dr. Fred Bliss have never been able to fathom Madge's uncanny prediction, for her dream did come true, in pink and blue!
