Chapter 13
Mario looked at her in utter
disgust. "Look, Mrs. Winston,
I've listened enough to your
silly priltle-prattleH and now il
you'll excuse me "
Mario's rudeness brought
Madge to her feet, and she spoke
coolly, "I'm left with only one
alternative, Miss Drew."
Mario looked at her coldly.
, "And what is that, Mrs. Wins
ton?" "I shall have to reconsider
' giving John a divorce."
Without another word Madge
picked up her purse and start
ed for the door, and Mario,
realizing she was in a tight
spot, grew panicky.
"Mrs. Winston wait!" she
called. ,
Madge turned. "Wait? For
, what?"
"I'm sorry I lost my temper,"
l'JA she said apologetically, forcing
T t meek smile.
"That's quite all right," said
Madge indifferently, knowing
she had the situation well in
hand.

BURGESS
"Won't you reconsider tell
ing me about your little plan?"
An amused smile came over
Madge's face. . "Then you're
willing to listen?"
It almost killed Mario to say
"Yes." v
"Very well," said Madge
lightly, as she returned to the
divan.
"I need a stimulant," said
Mario. "If I have Sophie make
some coffee, will you join me?"
"I'd be delighted."
"I'll tell Sophie."
In the meantime, downstairs
in the lobby, poor Mr. Dithers
the manager, knowing Madge
was upstairs, became excited
as he watched John Winston
come striding up to the desk.
"Good morning," said John
crisply. "I'd like to see Miss
Drew."
"But," Mr. Dithers choked
again and asked feebly, "do you
think you should?"
John looked surprised. "Why
not?"
"No reason, no reason," he
stuttered, and picked up the

Sophie answered the call j
from the kitchen's extension,!
and Mario, who had just en
tered to order some coffee,
stood by listening. !
"Miss Drew's residence," said
Sophie in her bored manner.
Then a sign of life came into
her deadpan face as she lis
tened and abruptly turned to
Mario.
"That flowery jerk down
stairs says Mr. Winston wants
to come up."
Mario stamped her foot im
patiently. "For cryin' out loud,
what's he doing here at this
hour of the morning?"
"Sha'll I say you're still
asleep?"
Mario thought hard. "No,
there's something screwy going
on. Tell Dithers to send him
up."
"But what about Mrs. Wins
ton?" "I'll get rid of her."
Mario swept back into the
living room.
"Mrs. Winston," she asked,
overgraciously, "I'm terribly
sorry, but it absolutely slipped
my mind that I promised to let
myself be interviewed this
morning. The man is on his way
up here now, so would you
mind waiting for just a few
moments in my bedroom?
"Not at all," and Madge rose
agreeably from the divan.
And as Madge entered the
bedroom Mario called to her,
"When he's gone, I'll listen to
that little plan of yours." As
she closed the door the front
door buzzer sounded.
Mario flew into the kitchen
as Sophie entered . from the
kitchen.
"Sophie, let him in and tell
him to join me on the terrace,"
she whispered, then nodded to
ward her bedroom. "I would
n't put it past Mrs. Fancy
Drawees in there to glue her ear
to the keyhole." Then she
quickly dashed out on the ter
race. As John crossed the room he
grew silghtly lightheaded from
the pungent aroma of too many
gardenias. And when he step'
ped out on the terrace, he was
tive greeting from Mario.
It was not Mario's dramatic
greeting that stunned John mo
mentarily, it was her daring
negligee.
"How nice to see you," she
cooed like a "lovey dove." As
her scantily-clad body drew se
ductively nearer John, he un

and his head grew light tgain
from the potent odor of her per
fume, Lotus Petals. His blush
ing face amused her.
"Something wrong, dearest?"
she asked unnecessarily.
"No, nothing," he gulped.
"Do sit down, darling," she
said, gracefully waving him to
a chair, while she proceeded to
stretch herself out most allur
ingly on the cushioned bamboo
chaisette.
I've just had the most devas
tating scene with Ben Golder
over you, precious.
John managed to squeeze in.
"Me?"
'Yes," she said, as she looked
at him adoringly. "Ben does
n't think you're worthy of my
great, great sacrifice."
"Sacrifice?"
John's question convinced
Mario 4hat he hadn't read Fp
ix Wilder's article in the morn
ing newspaper.
"Darling," she said tragical
ly, "I have some -marvelous
news for you."
And she let John ask, "You
have?"
"Yes," she sighed. "I, Mario
Drew, have retired from the
theatre."
"You have?" she let him say
again.
John wanted to tell her why
he was there and get away,
but instead, he forced a sickly
smile.
Then, like lightning, she
switched to a question that
shinned John.
"When are you going to force
your wife to apply for a div
orce?" she demanded.
"Force her?"
"After all," she changed to
a cooing voice, "she could post
pone getting one indefinitely,
couldn't she?"
"I suppose so."
Mario resented his indiffer
ent attitude and spoke tart
ly, ''I have retired from the
theatre, you know."
And John took a dangerus
lunge, saying, "Maybe you
shouldn't have retired so soon."
