the room, "But we'll soon find

with his request. He spread
the prints before him on a ta
ble and took from a briefcase
another set of fingerprints.
He carefully examined both sets
under a thick magnifying glass
for several minutes. Then he
leaned back in his chair and
when he spoke his voice was
ominous.
"Mrs. Blair, this is hard to
believe. I find your finger
prints on the drinking glass that
contained the dose of nitro
glycerine that killed your hus
band." If he had thought to frighten
or stampede her into a state
ment by such a remark, he was
immediately disap pointed.
Brenda had control of herself
now. She said nothing only
looked at him and waited.
But Christopher, on the far side
of the room, could fool the
sharp edge of fear that struck
back at her as Donohue show
ed the direction his investiga
tion would take. The lieuten
ant cleared his throat noisily
and continued in a harsh voice.
"Your fingerprints are also
on the medicine bottle your
maid brought him at his re
quest a couple of hours before
he died."
Brenda steeled herself for the
question she knew was coming.
"How do you explain that?"
"Why, I think the explana
tion is very simple." She faced
him steadily, only the faint
flush on her cheeks betraying
even the slightest trace of ner
vousness. "We always kept two glasses

The lieutenant made no com
ment so Brenda continued:
''Then I put the glass back in

in later to get a drink, or he
asked the maid to bring him a

easily happen. The glasses are
alike."
"What about the medicine
bottle?"
Very carefully Brenda an
swered this question. She would
tell the exact truth, but she
must tell it so that this ferret
eyed man could not twist it
later out of all semblance of the
truth to suit his own purposes.
For Brenda now had the very
definite feeling that Oonohue
was out to trap her if he could.
From being merely belligerent,
his attitude toward her since
morning had become one of
distinct hostility.
"All of Mr. Blair's medicine
bottles are alike. His medicine
always comes In bottles that
never vary one is exactly like
another. Before I left the
apartment, I straightened up
the bathroom. I remember
picking up a medicine bottle
and putting it back in the cabi
net. I assure you I did not no
tice at the time whether it was
full or empty and I do not
know now. I was not think
ing of medicine or fingerprints
at that particular moment."
Christopher watched her, fas
cinated. As Donohue made no motion
to stop her, she continued in
a low, even voice. "Naturally
my fingerprints would be on
that bottle just as they are
probably on every bottle in this
apartment. I should think it
would be a cause of much more
concern lo you if I had care
fully wiped all fingerprints off
that bottle, Lieutenant."
Her voice and her composure
challenged him. There was a
sardonic gleam in Donohue's
eyes as he swiftly acknowledg
ed her statement a tinge of
admiration in his voice.
"And that is fast thinking on
your part, Mrs. Blair. Very
disarming, too." But there was
a decided note of triumph in
his next statement.
"Only in this instance it
doesn't hold.
"If you took a drink from
the same glass your husband
used later, both of your finger
prints would be on athe glass
at practically the same place.
But if, on the other hand, you
handed him a lethal dose of
medicine, your fingerprints
would be found at the base of
the glass and his would be
above them, near, the rim.
That is the way we found the
glass, Mrs. Blair."
He waited significantly, and
a tense silence settled into a
peculiarly long drawn out
paus. Then Donohue said
slowly:
