Polk County Court of Honor
For Boy Scouts of District-
Dallas Approximately 100
scouting were in attendance at the Polk county district court of
honor for the Boy Scouts. The court was held in Scout Hall. Sid

Present were Mr. and Mrs.
Frank Fuqua, who make their
home with Mr.' Emery; Mr. and
Mrs. Ray Haines of Molalla;
Mrs. T. M. Ramsdell of Canby;
Mrs. Mary McDaniels of Hepp
ner; Charles Bower of the navy
and Mrs. Bower of Salem. Char
les is a grandson of Mr. Emery,
and has been overseas. He was
having a 30 day leave.
Mrs. T. M. Ramsdell's son,
Manley, another grandson of
Mr. Emery, has been chosen as
one of the guards for the meet
ing of the United Nations in
San Francisco, April 25. He Is
with the military police.
Another daughter of Mr. Em
ery, Mrs. Bert Blcakman and
Mr, Blcakman of Heppner, are
expected to arrive here next
Monday for a visit. They have
been visiting their children in
California.

with 18 scouts and 17 parents
present. The runner-up was
Troop 39, also of Dallas, with
a total of 28 scouts and parents
present.
Lt. Potter was introduced as
a new member of the Cascade
area scout family and expects
to participate in a supervisory
capacity at Camp Pioneer, the
council summer campsite.
Michelson gave a brief ac
count of the coming council-
wide patrol leaders' conference
which is to be held in Dallas
April 27 and 28, and urged all
scoutmasters who had not sent
in their reservations for the con
ference to do so. He also brief
ly outlined events that are to
take place in the council-wide
circus and camporee at the state
fairgrounds in Salem, during
the month of May.

Willamette river channel above
Albany is primarily to facilitate
the floating of logs from dumps
between that city and Corvallis,
the war department will make
the stretch adequate to carry
river transportation of all types.

Street Program
Held for Drive
Silverton Dr. A. L. V.
Smith, general chairman of the
national clothing drive, was
master of ceremonies of the
street, program in front of the
receiving center on East Main
street Friday. i
Frank Wenzel, director of
music in the schools of Silver
ton, presented nine members
of the school band in a several-number
concert, specializing
on patriotic airs and a hymn
dedicated to the late President
Roosevelt.
Speakers introduced by Dr.
Smith were George Christenson,
mayor of Silverton; Tom And
ersont representing the Rotary
club; and Errol Ross, president
of the Chamber of Commerce.
The talks stressed the need of
generous donations for the
needy of other countries. Don
ors may leave materials at the
center, or have them on their
porches for the Boy Scouts to
collect. The principal collec
tion was this afternoon, but the
center will be opened to re
ceive clothing for several addi
tional days.
Dr. Smith expressed grati
tude for all helpers, and the
Wiesncr loud speaker. A ges
ture of thanks was given Frank
Wenzel and the band.
Community Chest
Committee Sought
Dallas A war film, entitled
"Timber to Tokio" was shown
at the Fridav luncheon meet
ing of the Dallas Chamber of
Commerce, with Charles Bol
linger of the state industrial
accident commission in charge.
Business included the adop
tion of a resolution requesting
Mayor Hollis Smith to name a
community chest committee
composed of representatives
from various civic groups and
the appointment of a commit
tee comprising Eugene Hayter,
Dr. A. B. Starbuck and T. B.
Hooker to arrange a dinner
honoring W. V. Fuller., charter
and oldest member of the Cham
ber. Silverton A special guest
attending his mother's birthday
party, was Arnold Torgerson
from Denver, Colo., when mem
bers of the family and neigh
borhood friends arranged a
luncheon and social hour for
Mrs. A. Torgerson at the 211
Phelps street family home.
Ouesta were the son from Denver, the
tamily of another son from Salem, the
Aristl Albert Tomersona, Mr. and Mrs.

Alder. Family Leave
For Pittsburg, Calif.
Woodburn Mrs. Rodney Al
den and daughters Alice and
Ann left Friday for Pittsburg,
Calf., to join Alden who is edi
tor of the Pittsburg Post Dis
patch. Another daughter, El
sa, will remain in Woodburn
to complete the school year,
making her home with Miss
Carrie Waterbury.
Mrs. Alden has been active
in affairs of the Red Cross,
Camp Fire Girls, Woman's club
and the city library. They had
made their home here for 15
years during which time Al
den was editor of the Wood
burn Independent until last
September. They have sold
their home on Corby street to
Mr. and Mrs. Joseph Jacoby of
Hubbard.
Amity Residential
Changes Are Noted
Amity Mr. and Mrs. J. Cun
ningham have sold their home
in Amity and the adjacent farm
to a Mr. Jordan of Sheridan
and plan to move soon to Rex
where they have bought prop
erly. Mr. and Mrs. D. R. Barmore
and family of Portland are mov
ing to the former Elphi Sohn
place southeast of Amity. The
two Barmore boys, Jack and
Bob, are staying at the home
of their grandparents, Dr. and
Mrs. Chas. H. Law in Amity and
are attending the Amity school.
Mrs. Barmore is a daughter of
Mrs. Law.
Mr. and Mrs. Ralph Wood
have sold their home in the
northeast part of town to H.
Thorp, and are moving to the
former Eugene Sabin property,
near the highway just north of
Amity which they recently pur
chased. Trinity Lutheran
Men Plan Meeting
Silverton The Loyal Luth
eran Men of Trinity are to meet
Tuesday night at 2 o'clock at
the church. A special choir con
cert under direction of Mrs.
Tom Anderson is planned for
Sunday, May 13.
Mrs. Bertha Estenson will be
hostess to the Calvary Luth
eran Ladies Aid Wednesday, at
2 o'clock at the church parlors.
Immanuel Lutheran senior
Guild meets Wednesday, April
2.1, at the church parlors, Mrs.
Harold Loftus and Mrs. Albert
Funrue, hostesses. Both, the
junior at 7 o'clock and the sen

recreation center by student
committees of the high school
and junior high school, with
their parents as advisors has
been adoptted by the local re
creation council.
Members of the student com
mittee in charge of high school
nights each week at the center
are Dwayne Larson, chairman;
Al Dembowski, vice chairman;
Charlotte Jones, secretary. Hel
en Price Stanley Benge, Bob
McKnight, Orlando Ratzlaff and
Sharon Lamb. Faculty advis
ors are S. E. Whitworth, James
L. Brown, Mrs. Genevieve Be
harrell and Miss Barbara Adam.
Serving on the junior high
school student committee are
Patricia Richardson, Evelyn
Borland, Willie Heinrichs and
Keith Sanders, with J. M. O'
Brien faculty advisor.
High school students use the
PTA center Tuesday evenings
from 8:00 to 10:00 P. M. and
on Friday evening from 8:00 to
11:00. The junior high students
will have use of the center Wed
nesday nights, when the Chris
tian youth center is not open.
The tentative plan for the re
mainder of this school year is
to have all junior high students
who wish to play volley ball and ;
practice basketball use the jun
ior high gymnasium on Wed
nesday evenings from 7:30 to
9:00 P. M. Any junior high
students wishing to participate
in high school activities may
attend the PTA recreation cen
ter on Friday nights with the
high school students.
Clear Lake
A large crowd attended the
district missionary rally at Sa- j
lem. The women brought home
the attendance banner. There
were 16 members present from
Clear Lake.
Mr. and Mrs. Orel Garner had
as their Sunday dinner guests,
Mr. and Mrs. Arthur Evans and
Marjorie.
The Improvement club met
with an all-day quilting last
week. The women are making a

The Clear Lake school closed
at noon Friday in respect to
the memory of President Roose
velt. Sgt. J. W. Gregg was home
on furlough to visit with his
wife in Clear Lake and his par
ents in Portland. His wife is the
former Nellie Clement.
The Ambassador class will
hold services at the Clear Lake
Evangelical church Sunday. Lt.
William Ardrey, who has spent
2'.i years overseas, will speak.
He will also tell of his visit to
St. Paul's Cathedral in Rome
and the catacombs.

met at the Rosedale church
basement to effect a new Men's
organization. The evening's
program opened with games,
following which a male quar
tet from South Salem Friends
church furnished several num
bers. Oscar Brown spoke to the
group. Charter membership was
