Toy-Wise Tots Select Their Own Playthings Junior knows
his toys, so let him choose his own. This is the advice of Dora
Zarovich, designer of stuffed, washable toy animals. No, he does
n't necessarily have to shop with you, but you can test his likes
and dislikes, preference for color, and what he can handle by
bringing him in a toy store and
giving him free rein
That's the way Mrs. Zarovich
decides whether to market a
particular toy or not. She gets
the judgment of her young niec
es and nephews by studying
Hvftr reactions to a toy before
she makes her final decision.
As a result she has a definite
guide to the toy taste of children
of various ages.
When a baby is very young,
says Mrs. Zarovich, he has no
known preference, so his mother
usually buys him gentle, cuddly
animals such as lambs, in soft
pinks and blues. This is fine, she
says, as long as the animals are
waterproofed and colored with
vegetable dyes.
Later, at eight or nine months
children begin to recognize col
ors and generally the first one
they learn is red. So, it is' a good
idea when shopping for a child
this age to keep that in mind,
she says.
At two or three years, Mrs. ;
Zarovich discovered, a child i
ILvts the animals he is familiar
with. If he is city bred it might
be a dog, while the country boy
Ed; led by
chambers in Vancouver Wash
ington, Wednesday. Mr. and
Mrs. Williams, parents of the
bridegroom, witnessed the cer
emony. The bride wore a smart beige
tailleur with a brown fur coat
and brown accessories. Her
corsage was of gardenias.
Lt. and Mrs. Williams have
returned to Salem to spend the
Christmas holidays with his
family. They will leave later
for San Francisco where Lt.
Williams will report after his
leave.
The bride attended schools in
the east and is well-known in
Salem where her parents for
merly lived. Lt. Williams is a
graduate of Salem high school
and Willamette university,
where he was prominent in ath
letics. He has recently return
ed from the South Pacific,
where he has been awarded five
medals, which included the
Navy cross, for aerial achieve
ment against the enemy in the
Pacific.
Mr. and Mrs. Robert Million
will spend the Christmas holi
days in Seattle with her par
ents, Mr. and Mrs. Emil Sick.
The Minions will be in Port
land for New Year's as guests
of Mr. and Mrs. Robert Beebe.
Deaconess Staff
Has Gay Dinner
Over 130 employes of the Sa
lem Deaconess hospital and
guests were invited by the man
agement to the annual Christ
mas dinner held in the hospital
dining room Tuesday evening.
During the buffet dinner, in
the attractively decorated room
Miss Jessie Beldon record libra
rian and the ch airman of the
'program committee announced
Christmas selections and car
ols. Students from "Willamette
university assisted in the pro
gram, which included a vocal
solo by Miss Myrna Moore, with
Miss Barbara Tracger, accom
panist, and a Christmas read
ing by Miss Beverly Cox.
Following the dinner little
Miss Phyllis Ahalt and Master
David Barklow acted as Mr.
and Mrs. Santa Claus, present
ing gifts.
The personnel of the hospi
tal presented attractive gifts to
F. F. Wedel, manager of the
hospital, and Miss Sclma Hil
mer, superintendent of nurses.
will lean toward a horsp, cow,
pig or chicken.
But at four years she says a
change takes place, particularly
in little boys, who begin to
switch their taste to wilder ani
mals like lions, tigers and polar
bears.
Next, they show a preference
for technical toys. Little soft
stuffed gaily colored balls are
enjoyed by children of all ages.
A boy of four or six has just as
much fun with these as the little
toddler for whom they were
created.
