Tighter Control on
Lumber Predicted

Tighter controls over lumber
distribution were envisaged to
day, by the war production
board.
The agency predicted that
production from December to
mid-March will '"be substan
tially below" that of last win
ter, with the greatest drop ex
peel in the Pacific northwest.
J. Philip Boyd, director of
WPB's lumber and lumber pro
duet's division, said lack of
manpower with men leaving
the woods and mills for work
in other war industries is the
chief factor curtailing produc
tion. Scarcity of heavy-duty
tires, he added, is a contribut
ing factor.
Boyd urged the Industry to
concentrate on better grades
and species of lumber, calling

For Ward Case

Henrick Shipstcad (R. Minn.)
said today that if the govern
ment seizes any Montgomery
Ward properties in connection
with the firm's current dispute
with the war labor board, the
seizure should be investigated
by a senate committee.
Government seizure of the
firm's Chicago properties last
April was investigated by two
committees one in the senate,
the other in the house. The sen
ate group, headed by Sen. Pat
MacCarran (D. Ncv.) found that
the seizure was unwarranted.
The house group, headed by Rep.
Robert Ramspeck (D. Ga.) found
U legal and warranted.
The WLB already has refer
red to economic stabilization di

dispute concerning Ward's re
fusal to comply with WLB di
rectives ordering wage and oth
er adjustments for the firm's

Scion of Pioneers Dies

iel Peacock, 62, died Wednes

Mrs. Peacock was a member
