Chapter 28
In the living room, Angel
itood at the window and watch
ed the cab go down the street.
Louise remained standing in the
doorway where Martha had left
her, her hands clasped to a
face drained of all color. So
much was clear to her now
Angel's cruel indifference, her
complete lack of feeling regard
ing the child. Louise could un
derstand that. Angel had al
ways been selfish. But why
had she done this? It wasn't
like Angel to assume the care
of a child, no matter how much
money was involved.
"Mow can you live with your
self?" Louise blurted out at last.
"And why did you do it?"
Angel still stood with her
back burned,, "Why did I do
it?" she repeated, ignoring the
first question. If you must
know, I was broke at the time.
And a hundred a month that's
what Barbara promised to pay
sounded pretty good to me.
How did I know she'd dash
off to Arizona and leave me
stuck with the child?" She
turned now and faced Louise.
"And how did 1 know you'd
left Forest Hills, and that my
mail wouldn't be forwarded?"
That afternoon Angel re
ceived a telegram. It Informed
her that Jlmmle Saunders was
no longer missing. He had
slipped awny from an enemy
prison camp, and was at that
very moment recuperating in a
hospital overseas.
With a vague sense of shame
she noticed the feeling of panic
that swept over her. "I'm glad

about Jimmie- but what about
me?" She wondered if now,
without being a widow, she
could make good in her newest
and best-yet night club job . . .
Angel spared herself all she
could in the telling, explaining
to Louise and later to Martha
all about herself.
She said Elsa Rand had been
her roommate in the girls'
achonl they'd both attended in
the south. That Elsa had been
arrogant and jealous. That she
had been particularly boastful
about the handsome young avi
ator to whom she was engaged.
It seemed only natural to An
gel that she should take Elsa
down a peg. Only fair that she
should make a play for Jimmie
Saunders when he came unex
pectedly to see Elsa, and Elsa
was away for the week-end.
Only human that he should fall
in love with Angel, and that
three days after their first meet
ing they should run away to a
little town in Virginia and get
married. According to Angel,
it served Elsa right.
The marriage, she had to con
fess, had been a mistake. Both
she and Jimmie had realized
that almost immediately. Even
before he went overseas, plans
for a quiet divorce were being
made. Now that he was coming
back, it would oome through.
And he would marry Elsa, Just
as they'd planned.
Yes, she had told Martha and
Louise everything and they
had not turned away from her.
True. Martha had been shocked,
but the only comment she had
made was, "Poor Angel."

She had a brief moment of
misgiving when she recalled
Baby Jeanne, and the fact that
she had written to Jimmie's
parents and tried to pass her off
as Jimmie's child. They hadn't
believed her and she could
only hope they wouldn't tell
Jimmie about Baby Jeanne.
Martha brought the coffee and
put it on the dressing table in

smiling a little ruefully. Then
she began to put on her make
up. She would use very little
today, and she would wear her
simplest black dress, the black
coat left over from last year,
and the plain little hat with the
veil. It was no cocktail date
that she was going to, as she
had told Martha. It was an ap
pointment with Jimmie's law
yer. It would be a little diffi
cult for her but she was sure
there would be a nice settle
ment. Jimmie's family wasn't
poor and Jimmie himself, she
w frank to acknowledge, was
a very grand person, It was
reallv too bad their marriage
hadn't worked out. . .
"But some day hell come
back" she smiled at herself in
the mirror "and he won't be
ashamed for people to know that
once he was married to me. 1 11
be singing at the smartest night
club in town with my name
in lights on the marquee. He'll
be married to Elsa, and they'll
come to the club where I'm
singing. But I won't snoot
them. I'll sing something swe.et
and sentimental. Something
old Thanks for the Memories,
perhaps. It wouldn't hurt to
give that self-satisfied Elsa
jolt.
She drank the black coffee
which Martha had brought and
began hurriedly to dress, hum
ming softly as she did so. She
had reasoned herself out of
what might have been a very
black mood, and was feeling
rather virtuous about the whole
thing.
