Orvis H. Newman and Miss
Jennie E. Watson were married
August 9, 1894 in Edgar county,
111. JBoth were school teachers.
They lived in Illinois until 1925,
when they came to Oregon and
lived in Mill City for 19 years,
moving to Amity last month.
Mr. and Mrs. Newman have
three children, J. Harold New
man of Tillamook, Mrs. Marie
Felt of Champaign, 111., and T.
V. Newman of Amity. There
are nine grandchildren and one
great grandson.
Among those present Sunday
were a nephew, Warren Cook
of Nyssa, Ore., who was pre
sent at the wedding fifty years
ago, and a daughter, Mrs. Amy
Marie Felt of Champaign, 111.
Wilfred Fishers Leave
For Home in Kentucky

daughter, Frances, have left for
Kentucky where Rev. and Mrs.
Fisher are teachers in the Moun
tain Bible Institute, following
two months spent in Silverton
with Rev. Fisher's parents and
with Mrs. Fisher's parents, Mr.
and Mrs. Floyd Boyington of
Salem, and attending the Jen
nings Lodge Oregorv-Washing-ton

Is Honored
On Anniversary

Mrs. S. A. Jones, who for the
past three weeks has been vis
iting in the capital city, and
last week celebrated her 83rd
birthday anniversary, Mrs. W.
H. Anderson entertained with
a dinner party at the Anderson
home Wednesday evening.
A bouquet of mixed summer
flowers centered the dinner
table and about the guest rooms
were arrangements of zinnias,
asters and gladioluses.

Susan Biddle, Mrs. Violet Odg
ers of Portland. Miss Florence

Returning to the capital city
the past week-end after spend
ing a week at Neskowin, where
they were registered at the Nes
kowin hotel, were Mrs. Asel
Eoff and son, Joseph, who a
week ago were taken to the
beach by Mr. Eoff.

Training
Formerly connected with the
state department of education
office here, Seaman Second
Class Frances Paris, daughter of
R. D, Paris, who enlisted some
time ago for service in the
Waves, has completed her indoc
trination training in New York
City and has been selected for
advance yeoman training at
Stillwater, Okla.
The Salem Wave, who at com
pletion of her advanced yeoman
training will be rated as a yeo
man, third class, attended the
University of Wisconsin and pri
or to her enlistment was a mem
ber of the Salem Girls' Service
organization.
Garden Club Guest
At H. E. McWain Home
Entertained in the gardens at
the home of Mr. and Mrs. H. E.
McWain Thursday night were
members of the Little Garden
club of Salem Heights and their
families.
The no-host supper was serv
ed in the garden from a table
centered with an arrangements
of early fall flowers.
During the evening a number
of souvenirs sent home by West
ley McWain, who is stationed
in the South Pacific with the
armed forces, were on display
and the guests were entertain
ed at contests with prizes won
by Mrs. Doris Woodburn and
Lewis Anderson.

Platoon leaves
For Training
Typical American girls, who
temporarily have laid aside
their professions to help in win
ning the war are the 25 newly
enlisted Waves comprising Sa
lem's first special platoon of
navy women.
Former teachers, sales girls,
clerks, typists, stenographers,
cooks, student nurses and busi
ness machine operators, are
these young women who Sunday
left for Hunter college to be
gin their indoctrination train
ing. In that group is Elma Helen
Hoffman of Dallas, who on re
ceiving the fateful message
"The war department regrets to
inform you " decided to enter
the Waves to release another
man for active duty to avenge
the death of her husband, an
army man killed on a foreign
battlefield.

Good Conduct Medal
Awarded Salem Were

duct medal, awarded to mem
bers of the Wacs showing exem
plary behavior, efficiency and
fidelity and serving for a year
or more in that branch of the
armed forces, is Pfc. Helen Blu
mensteil, formerly of Salem. The
red and white ribbon to be worn
on the upper left blouse pocket
in lieu of the medal, which will
be awarded at the war's end,
was presented Pfc. Blumensteil
this month.
Recently commissioned a sec
ond lieutenant in the army of
the United States and assigned
to the army nurses corps, is Pat
Marie Bergin, of Salem, who
will report to Camp White, Ore.,
to receive basic training before
reporting to Dibble General hos
pital, Menlo Park, Calif., where
she has been assigned for duly.
Mrs. Edna Blair, who has
been visiting in the capital city
as the guest of Mrs. Merle Ham
ilton left last week-end for her
home in San Bernardino, Calif.
