the telegram Gil had sent.
"Elvan blinded In laboratory

fully. He shook his dark head.
"This is more irrational than
the others," he commented.
Drusilla's letters for the last
two months had been threaded
with a strange, turbulent inco

the rambling, was more out
spoken. The letter ended: "Spring,

which will be more difficult."
"I don't know." Spring shiv
ered again. The fog wrapped
tight about windows and the
room seemed to close in on them j
suffocatingly. "I don't know!
Oh, Dirk, I'm afraid!" j
They went back out on the
platform, where It was possi
ble to keep in motion at least.
Dirk said gently, "There's noth
ing to be afraid of, that's why
I came, honey. So you would
n't be alone. So they couldn't
rush you into anything. We'll
see this through together."
They walked up and down
the platform another ten min
utes. Then they discovered the
fog was deepening into night
and that the rnin was clattering
less fiercely on the roof.
"How far is it to Candle
wood?" Dirk asked suddenly.
"Five miles."
He was silent a minute.
"Let's try telephoning," he
suggested. ''Perhaps they've
forgotten the time."
But the telephone brought no
answer. Ten minutes later
they set out, hand in hand, to
walk the long, nun-beaten dis
tance to Candlewood House.
"Sure you know the way?"
Dirk asked.
"Yes. We follow this road
to the bridge over Burton's I
Creek. Candlewood is on the ;
side road, to the right, up i
where the country grows hilly."
They strode along at a quick,
rhythmic pace. The rain sot
Hod into a monotonous song.

the road began to climb. They
could see the dim shapes of
bushes and trees along the road,
and sometimes an occasional
building set back against the
sky. Once or twice the fright
ened cry of a bird broke
through the beat of rain.
Oddly, childishly, Spring still
was afraid. Afraid, she admit
ted to herself, beyond the
strangeness of her aunt's let
ters or the dreadful accident
to Elvan. She had been afraid,
really, with that premonition
of disaster, from the moment
she had stepped onto Ten Mile
depot platform and felt herself
clutched in the cold, grasping
fingers of the rain and fog.

"There are no farms up here,
it's too hilly," Spring said.
"In the days of gasoline, five
miles didn't seem like any
thing." She failed in a smile.
"Tonight, it's different."
"Here's the bridge!" he an
nounced a little later. He
made his voice cheerful for
her. "Right, you said?"
Right," she answered.
As they crossed the swollen,
driven waters of Burton's Creek
rushed along halfway to their
meet and the clamor smother
ed the drumming rain.
"It's good we're getting high
er all the time." Dirk remark
ed, staring down at the muddy
Creek. "They must have had
some bad rains. Where does
this go?"
"Into the river below Wood
City."
"I wouldn't care to live in
Wood City tonight," said Dirk.
They said no more for a little
while. Spring was getting tir
ed. She lost step twice and
knew that Dirk was readjust
ing his to ease her. She felt
his hand tighten suddenly on
hers. .
"What was that?"
They stopped, listening.
There was the wind rushing
down from the hills in wild
pursuit of the rain, there was
the angry voice of the creek
shrieking after them and
then there was something else.
Spring strained over the
storm's tumult to distinguish
the sounds. They were like
small hammers, dull, regular,
drawing closer.
"Dirk!" she cried, but he rec
ognized them now, too.
"Horse hoofs!"
He called out. "Hello! Hel
lo there! Hello!"
The sounds slowed, stopped.
There was a grunt. "That you,
Miss Spring?"
"Yes! Who is it?"
Spring was running now,
running from her fear back
there in the fog, and she star
ed up at th? face peering
through the mist. "Is is that
you. Josh?"
They heard another indis
tinct grunt, or perhaps just a
clearing of a throat. "Had to
go by Mr. Elvan's on the way
to town. Got stuck on the road
out. Found your note at the
depot. Get in."
