Robot Bombs Put English
Civilians Again in Front Ranks
By Jack Frankish
Southern England, June 21 iU,R) Imagine a giant pinball ma
chine covering hundreds of square miles. Every time the ball
lights a bumper there Is the flash of an explosion. Scores of miles
away a little band of Germans)
is playing the game and your
home is one of the bumpers they
are trying to light. Or at least
you are sure they are aiming
for you, and the "ball' is one
of the German robot bombs.
But there is a difference be
tween this grisly game and a
peaceful one in the corner drug
store. This one is ' for keeps."
There is one consolation. The
Germans can't see the bumpers
when they light and they never
know the score.
This game of wrecked homes
Jobs for Year
In Shipyards
Portland, Ore.. June 21 fU.Rl
Jobs for at least 12 months for
all workers now employed in
U. S. maritime commission ship
yards in the Portland area were
assured today by Rear Admiral
Howard L. Vickery, vice chair
man of the United States mari
time commission, here on an in
spection tour.
Vickery announced that the
Albina engine and machine
works have been added to the
commission's units here and that
is has been awarded a contract
to build four slecl, 4000-ton
coaster vessels.
Although not officially, he
also said that "undoubtedly,
more drydocks will be built at
the Kaiser Vancouver yard."
One now under construction is
going to Swan Island yard.
The addition of Albina, makes
four maritime commission yards
in the Portland area. The other
three are Kaiser Vancouver,
Oregon Shipbuilding, and Kaiser
Swan Island.
Vickery said that the Port
land yards working for the com
mission have all the work they
can possibly do for an entire
year right now, and more is
available and will be assigned
here from time to lime.
Sammons Talks Bonds
At Ship Launching
Portland, June 21 W in the
next 100 days American fight
ing men will wrile history for
100 years to come and their
efforts must be backed with

Swan Island shipyard last
night. Mrs. Ted R. Gamble,
wife of the national director of
the treasury department's war
finance division, christened the

broadcast nationally as part of
a treasury bond program.
"Ted Gamble says this war
is costing us $2.'0,000,000 a
day," Sammons said. ''Oregon's
share is $125,000,000, or one 12
hour shift." .
Sammons earlier announced
fifth war loan bond sales had
reached $15,902,520 for 12.7
percent of quota.
State Opens Bids
On Auto Insurance
The state board of control
said today it would consider a
proposal for the state to set up
its own system of insuring state
owned cars and trucks against
public liability and property
damage caused to vehicles
which collide with state vehi
cles. The state already insures it
self against damage lo state cars
and trucks.
The board opened bids today
on public liability and property
damage insurance for the year
beginning June 30. The truck
insurance exchange, which has
the business for the current
year for $11.8B8, bid $8968 for
next year's business. The bid
amounts to $4.69 per vehicle.
Three other companies bid
from $15,000 lo $17,000.
For the state lo set up its
own insurance system would
require an act of the legislature.

and churches, of sudden death
and mangled bodies has been
going on for nearly a week
now and millions of English ci
vilians are in 'front lines'
again, as close to danger as their
fathers, husbands, and sons
across the channel in Nor
mandy. All of us learned quickly to
adapt ourselves to this new life
under attack. It doesn't take
long to develop the technique
for diving flat on your stomach
preferably under a table and
as far away from windows and
mirrors as possible when you
hear the roar of an approaching
bomb.
A motorcycle or truck motor
will make you prick up your
ears for a moment but when
you hear the flying bomb you
know it by its unmistakable
"washing machine" sound,
especially when It is flying too
close for comfort.
When you hear the motor go
silent, look out the window and
see the robot bomb diving to
earth a couple of hundred yards
away, you forget completely
how ridiculous you must look
as you dive for cover.
Not since the blitz have the
English civilians been under
such constant attack. The
robot bomb offensive began last
Thursday night and although
there are occasional lulls when
no jet-propelled explosives fall
in your own district for hours,
you never can be sure night or
day when the next one will be
coming your way.
House fo Probe
Election Frauds
Washington, June 21
The house today set up machin
ery for investigating any sus
pected election fraud this pres
idential campaign year and for
the first time wrote labor
unions into the scope of the in
vestigation. Heretofore biennial Investi
gation of congressional cam
paigns has been confined ,(o
contributions that may have
been made illegally by corpor
ations or other business asso
ciations. The house rewrote the resolu
tion to make susceptible to In
vestigation the contributions of
individuals, partnerships, cor
porations, committees or labor
unions.
In addition, attention Is to be
paid to "the amounts raised,
contributed and expended by
any labor organization, trade or
business association and any
other agency."
As the measure came out of
the rules committee it included
"any political committee" con
nected with a labor organiza
tion, but this language was re
moved on the motion of Rep.
Marcantonio (AL, NY) who
said it was "singling out labor
unions" too much.
The "political committee"
phrase was intended, rules com
mittee members had said, to ap
ply to the CIO political action
committee, named as a factor
in the several special elections
this year.
Marcantonio said as finally
drawn the resolution "takes in
everybody without singling out
anybody."
Speaker Ray burn will ap
point a committee of seven
house members to conduct the
investigation.
Skeleton Found
But Clues Absent
Bremerton, Wash., June 21
(U.P) The skeleton of a man burr
ied in a shallow grave in the
low tide sands of Hood canal
was the only clue Kitsap county
authorities had today into what
appeared to be a violent death.
The skeleton, with kneer
length rubber boots and a few
remnants of clothing, was
found buried in the sand and
weighted with heavy rocks by
Mrs. J. A. Pardo of Seattle, and
her sons, Alan, 14, and Richard,
11. The grisly discovery wa$
made when Richard pulled one
of the boots protruding from,
between rocks and bones wer
found inside.
Digging in the sands noar
Hansville, authorities later re
covered all of the bones except a
portion from the skull leading
to the belief that the man had
been murdered.
