Chapter 14
"Mademoiselle Girard, may I
present Fraulcin Lange, of 'the
Women's Communiration Corps,
who desired to meet you," said
Von Egert( bowing. "You are
difficult to locate mademoiselle.
I have called several times at
the apartment on the Rue de
Vaugirard where you are stay
ing, and also at the cafe, but I
haven't yet been fortunate en
ough to discover you."
"It is not an easy life to earn
one's living, Hcrr Kapitan," re
turned Adrienne smiling, reliev
ed that her tete-a-tete with
Schafer had been interrupted.
"I am sorry you should have
taken so much trouble for no
thing." "I am repaid now by the sight
of you," he rejoined, his eyes
resting on her in a way she
found embarrassing. "Won't you
both join us for supper at Max
im's?" "Thank you but for me it
will be impossible." Adrienne
returned. She sensed Schafer
was ill pleased at the interrup
tion, though he had bowed and
made some casual remarks to
Fraulein Lange, who was re
garding her with curiosity and
a veiled hostility.
"Then permit me to drive you
home, mademoiselle. My car is
waiting and it will save Herr
Schafer from going out of his
way. Fraulein Lange and I can
then go on to Maxim's later."
"If Herr Schafer has no ob
jection, I will be glad to accept
your offer," Adrienne said. "I
find I am very tired. Shall we
leave now?"
"If you wish." Von Egcrt
glanced at Schafer. "I am sure
Herr Schafer understands."
A minute later she had ex
pressed her thanks and apolo
gies to the discomfited Schafer
and accompanied Von Egert and
Fraulein Lange to the waiting
car.
When he had given the Rue
de Vaugirard address to his
chauffeur, Von Egert said smil
ing, "I fancied you were rather
bored this evening, and thought
I would rescue you."
"That was a happy thought,"
she answered smiling, and
glanced diffidently at Fraulein
Lange's well defined profile,
coldly aloof.
"1 think I have seen you
somewhere in uniform, fraulein.

It must be interesting work you
are doing."
'Yes, very interesting," re
turned Fraulein Lange, "In fact
life here is a continual revela
tion." She glanced with interest
at Von Egert as she spoke.
Madame Dupont. cashier at
the Cafe Dragon Rouge, was
knitting in the living room of
her small apartment on the
fourtja floor of an apartment
house on the Rue de Vaugirard.
As her needles clicked, her
thoughts were busy with the
recent developments in the situ
ation at the cafe. She was aware
that the Gestapo agent, Herr
Schafer, had kept a watchful
eye on all that went on inhere,
and that since the fateful day
of his encounter with the Amer
ican airman he had redoubled
his vigilance.
What could one do? She had
known Adrienne since the lat
ter's childhood days, and having
no children of her own, had lav
ished on the girl a certain ma
ternal fondness and interest. She
knew that this was the day that
Johns Farrel was to have made
an attempt to escape the nazi
net, and her lips moved in a
prayer for his safety.
Several days before, unknown
to Adrienne, who had been ab
sent at the time from the cafe,
the entire restaurant premises
and the flat above had been
searched by members of the
gestapo, who had ransacked
even the cupboards and looked
under the beds in M. Dussault's
living quarters, and on finding
no one, had gone away discom
fited and baffled. Madame Du
pont and Dussault had exchang
ed anxious glances during this
ordeal, and the latter had sug
gested that it might be just as
well not to mention it to Adri
enne, until Faarrel got safely
away.
Her train of thought was sud
denly broken by the sound of
a latch key turning in the en
trance door. She heard a light
footfall, then Andienne's voice.
"Adrienne, ma petite," she ex
claimed rising, her dark eyes
fixed on the girl with a wel
coming look tempered by con
cern. "Where have you been?
Did he get away safely?"
"Yes, so far all is well." Ad
rienne slipped off her jacket and
hat. She sank into an easy
chair. "I only begin to realize

She told everything exceDt I
about the wedding.
No suspicion of this dawned
on Madame Dupont. She sighed
a little as she looked at Adri
enne, and marvelled at her an
parent serenity. How differently
she would have reacted in her
youth to such a situation.
Her concern deepened how
ever when Adrienne mentioned
her chance meeting with Schaf
er, omitting any allusion to their
subsequent conversation, and
later her encounter with Von
Egert at the Continental, She
shook her head gravely.
"I do not like it," she pro
tested, "These encounters are
dangerous for you, mon enfant."
"It can't be helped." Adrienne
shrugged her shoulders. "What
would you have me do?"
"It is difficult to say, but it
is dangerous for you."
Madame Dupont rose and'
went to the tiny kitchenette op
ening off the little hall, opposite
the living room. "You look a
trifle tired, and I'm going to
make you some cafe-au-lait.
You were wise to come here
under the circumstances. I did
not mention to you that Von
Egert has called several limes
at the cafe."
"So you don't always tell me
who my callers are." Adrienne
shook a finger at her in playful
admonition. "He himself told
me."

Schafer," Madame Dupont plac
