Notice Is hereby given that on the 6th
day of March. 1944, at the hour of 10
o'clock A.M.. in the County Court Toom
In the Marlon County Court House, in
Salem. Oregon, there will be a public
hearing on the matter of levying a tax
for the creation of a fund for the con
struction of a County Court House, held
pursuant to an order or the County court
of Marion County, Oregon, made and en
tered on the 31st day of January, 1944,
which order was made in compliance
with Chapter 3 of Title 80, Oregon Com
piled Laws Annotated, being sections 86
301. to and including 86-309.
The people of Marlon County, Oregon,
are hereby further notified that In ac
cordance with the order of the County
Court, above mentioned, dated the 2 1st
day of January, 1944, the County Court
of Marlon County, Oregon, has deemed
it advisable to build a new county court
house for Marlon County, and in furher
ance of this purpose, to secure the the
necessary funds by levy of a tax for the
purpose of creating a County Court House
Building fund.
The County Court proposes to build
the new court house upon the same site
now owned by Marlon County, and upon
which site is at present situated the pres-
en Court House, which site is described

Marion County, as said property is al

It is proposed to commence consruc-
tion upon said new county court house
or about. July 1. 1954. or as soon as
funds are available for such construction.
The cost of said new court house con
struction is approximated by said county
court to be the sum of $750,000.00 dollars,
and it Is proposed to raise said sum by
the levy of an annual tax In the sum of
$75,000.00 dollars each year, for the period
of ten years, namely the years 1944, 1945,
1946. 1047. 1948. 1949. 1950. 1951
1052, and 1953 or until such time as the
funds accumulated by virtue of said an
nual tax levy, which sum increased by
any sum or sums donated by any firm,
person, or corporation for such purpose,
or any sum or sums granted by the fed
eral government or governmental agency
upon a proportionate basis for such pur
pose, shall constitute the approximate
sum ns hereinbefore designated as the
necessary sum to cover the cost of said
construction. In which event the date
of construction shall be advanced ac
cordingly. The proposed tax levy, an hereinbe
fore referred to. Is to be levied within
the limitation of the specific authoriza
tion as provided In Article XL Section
XI, Oregon Constitution, and said pro
posed tax levy Is therefore not to be
submlted to the legal voters of Marlon
County, Oregon.
This notice Is hereby published In the
Capital Journal, a newspaper printed and
of general circulation In Marion County,
Oregon, the same to be published weekly
five consecutive times, the date of the
first publication to be the 24th day of
January, 1044, and the last date of publi
cation to be the 28th day of February,

appeared in other stagings of
"The Messiah" and some of
whom have had considerable
professional experience.
Camp Adair soldier was Sgt.
Fordyce Waldo, who had the
bass role, and .from the navy
V-12 set-up at Willamette uni
versity came the tenor, Michael
Carolan.
Waldo prior to entering the
army did considerable church
solo work in addition to direct
ing music for several churches,
and appeared with the Marshal
Field Choral Union, the Men
delssohn club and the Apollo
club of Chicago and the Chi
cago Opbrctta company.
The tenor soloist, who leaves
soon for Asbury Park, New Jer
sey, to complete his mid-ship-man's
training, was a student
at Willamette university, when
he entered the navy and his solo
work has been at the First
Methodist and First Congrega
tional churches in Salem and
with the Willamette university
a cappella choir.
Josephine Albert Spaulding,
the mezzo-soprano, and Miss
Evangeline Mcrritl, the soprano,
both claim Salem as their
homes.
Mrs. Spaulding, who through
the years has been most gener
ous with her musical talents, is
a recognized soloist through
out tha northwest met titer
graduation from Willamette uni
versity, studied in the east at
the Julliard School of Music.
She has appeared as soloist with
both the Portland Philharmonic
orchestra and the Portland
Symphony orchestra.
New to Salem this year, Miss
Merritt, is a member of the
Willamette university School of
Music faculty, and has in her
few appearances before Salem
audiences impressed them with
the qualities of her voice. For
three years an instructor in the
College of Emporia, In Emporia,
Kansas, she received her mas
ter's degree from Eastman
School of Music.

Surprise affair of Saturday
evening was the farewell party
for which Dr. and Mrs. Carl W.
Emmons were hosts at their
home Saturday night honoring
Mr. and Mrs. Herman Miller.
Mr. Miller, who has been con
nected with the Oregon State
department of vocational educa
tion, will leave the first of the
month for Eugene to take a sim
ilar position with the Washing
ton state department of educa
tion. He will be Joined in June
by Mrs. Miller and1 their three
daughters, Carol, Norma and
Marilyn.
Eighteen guests were bidden
to the dinner party, which was
held in the recreation room.
Centering the dinner table was
a colorful arrangement of pot
tery and fruits.
