Reappointment of A. A. Rog
ers as state superintendent of
banks was announced by the
state banking board following a
brief session here this morning.
The decision to reappoint Rog
ers, first named to the post in
1939, was unanimous, Governor
Earl Snell said.
Rural Homes
Are Destroyed
Dayton, Ore., Dec. 21 Fire
of undetermined origin Saturday
completely destroyed the six
room farm home of Mr. and Mrs.
Russell Coburn near Dayton. It
had recently been rebuilt. Noth
ing was saved from the second
story, and only the light furni
ture and a part of other belong
ings were salvaged from the first
story.
Mrs. Coburn and three small
daughters were alone at the time
and she was preparing breakfast
when she discovered the fire
In the kitchen attic. Mr. Coburn
left Friday with a group fit
Mexican laborers for a wood
cutting project near Forest
Grove and has not yet learned
of the loss, which is partially
covered by insurance.
No one was injured.
The three girls are with their
maternal grandparents, Dr. and
Mrs. Orr C. Goodrich, and Mrs.
Coburn is. with her husband's
parents.
The Dayton volunteer fire
fighters responded but too late
to do any good in quenching the
-, flumes.
: Amity, Dec. 21 The farm
home of Mr. and Mrs. Jim Rchi
and family east of Amity was
burned to the ground Sunday
morning. The fire was caused
by a defective flue. The fire de
partments of Amity and Mc
Mlnnvillc succeeded in saving
the brn, shed, woodhouse, and
storeroom of vegetables and
fruits. The house and contents
were covered by insurance. The
farm formerly owned by J. F.
Mauser of Amity was bought by
Mr. Rehl who moved here from
Corvallis recently.

Publish Again
Washington, Dec. 21 W) War
labor board intervention today
restored daily newspaper pub
lication in the national capital
after a 24-hour suspension.
Presses stood idle in four
publishing plants yesterday as
members of the Columbia Typo
graphical Union denying they
were on strike conducted a
continuous union meeting in
connection with wage adjust
ment negotiations with the
Washington Publishers' Asso
ciation which had failed to re
sult In an agreement.
The meeting prevented print
ers from reporting at their shops
and the Morning Washington
Post and Morning Times-Herald
were able to get out only
skimpy Monday editions. The
Evening Star and the Evening
News were unable to publish at
ail and a federal conciliator cer
tified 'the matter to WLB as a
labor dispute.
WLB promptly ordered a re
turn to work and the union
voted 158 to 8.1 early this morn
ing to go back on the job and
resume the wage negotiations.
Union President Jesse B. Man
beck announced, however, that
the continuous union meeting
would be resumed in 48 hours
unless "tangible" results were
forthcoming in that time.
Both the Post and the Times
Herald got out late morning edi
tions today, practically normal
in size, and normal afternoon
publication was resumed by the
Star, afternoon Times-Herald
nnd News.
Manbcck said the printers
wore asking a $1.33 a day in
crease, with an hourly minimum
of $1.65 '.2, asserting these
workers were entitled to such
an adjustment under the "little
steel" fomula. The present
minimum is $1.47 an hour. He
said the publishers had ordered
to raise this minimum to $1.57,
with additional compensation
