The Plot Against Santa

Chapter 16
Pelcr Tries the Golden Key
Six great bearded soldiers
with lighted torches led Peter
down three winding corridors
until they came to a huge iron
door. It took three of the sol
diers to turn the key in the lock
and push the door open. On the
other side was a narrow flight
of stairs down which the sol
diers dragged the boy.
The light from the torches
cast strange reflections on the
cold damp walls but as they
descended lower and lower even
tho torches seemed to flicker
and grow dim.
When they reached, the bot
tom of the stairs there was an
other flight to descend and af
ter that, another, and still an
other. At last they reached
the last stair and there was an
other heavy door which the
guards must unlock and push
open with all their strength.
When it was thrown open the
light of the torches fell on a
row of liny cells.
Peter could hear a low moan
ing but it was so dark he could
n't see the prisoners who stood
behind the barred doors. The
soldiers threw him into the
nearest cell and marched away
leaving only one small torch
to light the dungeon.
Peter shivered and drew his
jacket high, around his throat.
He felt like crying because he
was quite frightened but he
knew that tears would do him
no good. He felt his way to
the side of the cell and sudden
ly he gave a cry of astonish
ment for his hand had touched
a man's arm.
"W who are you?" he quav
ered. The arm stirred and a man
slowly turned and faced Peter.
The light of the torch was so
dim that all the boy could see
was a thin figure of a man with
a narrow face and a long beard.
"I am Charles," said the man
in a harsh voice. "King of
Aradoonc."
Peter's eyes widened with
amazement. "But you you arc
dead!" he gasped, for he well
remembered how Uttar had be
come king on the death of his
brother, Charles.
The man laughed grimly.

Open Sawdust
Fire Nuisance
Maintenance of an open saw
dust fire with no device or ap
paratus for control shoujd be
enjoined but reasonably con
trolled burner or furnace should
not be included in an injunc
tory decree, the state supreme
court held today as it upheld
but modified the decree of lhe
circuit court for Lane county
in the case of Linus W. Lindley
vs. Wilbur H. Hyland and oth
ers (Eugene Planing Mill).
The case, which came to the
court here on appeal by the
defendants, involved claims of
the plaintiff that smoke and
refuse from the mill's fires en
veloped his home and caused
him to suffer physically. Lind
ley had asked for $500 damages
in his suit for an injunction,
and received the injunction but
not the damages. Since he had
not appealed, the supreme court
could not award him the money
asked, the opinion, written by
Associate Justice Percy R.
Kelly, points out. However, the
opinion continues with an ex
pression of belief that the
plaintiff had suffered damages.
The court denied a petition
for a rehearing in the case of
Lane vs. Hatfield, a death dam
age action growing out of a
pedestrian-traffic accident, in
which the plaintiff was award
ed $5000 by a circuit court in
Marion county.
Two Negroes Admit
Grocery Hold-up
Seattle, Dec. 21 (U.R)Two
negroes, James Wilson, 32, and
Persia Willaims, 38, confessed
yesterday to the grocery store
holdup last week which result
ed in the death ol Joseph Ro
magnoli and the wounding of
his wife, Marie, and Frank
Nesco, a roomer.
Williams, who was arrested
Friday, admitted he had parti
cipated in the crime and men
tioned Wilson as an accomplice.
Wilson was arrested immedia
tely and also signed a confes
sion. Each blamed the other for
shooting the grocer.
Military mail transported over
seas averages more than 50,000,
pieces a week.
"That is what my brother has
told the world," he said. "But
he himself cast me into this
dungeon 18 months ago and
made himself king."
"But why don't you es
cape?" cried Peter.
"How escape?" asked Char
les bitterly. "You saw how
many locked doors lie between
us and freedom. There's not a
chance of getting out. I'll bo
here until 1 die and so will you."
"Not I!" cried Peter. "1 must
get out and soon."
And he told Charles the story
ot Santa's sled and reindeer
which were locked in the King's
stables.
"So you see I must escape,"
he finished. "Or there will bo
no more Christmas in Aradoonc.
And you must escape, too, for
only by restoring you as right
ful king will the people ever
be happy again."
"Yes, that is true," agreed
Charles. "But only magic will
save us."
"Well, then," said Peter, "I
believe that I have that magic."
"What:" cried Charles. "You
have magic?"
Then Peter told him about
the ivory horse that had be
come a real live horse when he
most needed it.
"But a horse will do us no
good here," said Charles.
"No," agreed Peter, "but I
have also a golden key!" And
he pulled out of his pocket the
tiny gold key the sick mother
had given him.
Charles examined the key
eagerly. At last he was be
ginning to have hope. "Try it!"
he exclaimed, his hands shak
ing wilh excitement. "Try it
at once!"
Quickly Peter stuck the key
in the padlock which bound
the cell door.
"It's loo small!" he gasped,
tears of disappointment spring
ing to his eyes.
Charles bent over the lock.
"Wait!" he whispered. And a
mcnt later he cried, "It is get
ting larger! It is growing to
the size of the lock. It fits
exactly!"
And suddenly he turned the
key and the padlock fell open!

Be Shortest Day
By Nick Bourne
(United Pr Btnlf correRpimdcntl
San Francisco, Dec. 21 lU.P.)
Approach of the winter solstice,
creeping without warning upon
the nation's over - burdened
alarm clocks, today brought
the following advice from the
weather bureau, astronomers
and clock fixers:
"Wind your clock up tight to
night The longest of the 'year
Tomorrow is the shortest day
From dawn to dusk's so near
You may not hear the bell at all
This warning is a must
So wind your clock up tight
tonight
And pray the spring won't
bust."
The winter solistice, marking
the long and short of the day
and night business, occurs at
1:30 p. m., EWT, Dec. 22. It is
the time the sun "stands still"
and brings more wear and tear
on the alarm clock than any
other day. After the solstice, the
days grow longer and, theoreti
cally, it's easier to wake up.
Significance Seen in
MacArthur Silence
Washington, Dec. 21 (IT)
Supporters of Gen. Douglas
MacArthur as a potential presi
dential candidate, are taking
his silence as golden assurance
of acceptance if he is drafted.
Sen. Vandenberg (Ft., Mich.),
says: "I shall continue to as
sume that he will accept unless
he says he would not."
Interest in the MacArlhur-for-President
move has been
heightened by two principal de
velopments. The first was the
disclosure by the war depart
ment that an officer is not bar
red from accepting a nomina
tion for office: The second was
the report that MacArthur re
cently touched on the subject
of United States politics in an
off-tho-rccord conference with
a visiting Canadian newspaper
parly.
