Victoria, May 21 (CP) A
fate that might better have been
reserved for a marauding axis
submarine sinking by ram
ming may have befallen "Cad
dy," legendary sea monster who
for years have been the No. 1
marine denizen of British Co
lumbia coastal waters.
Will Caddy's snake-like coils
and what-is-it head no longer
rear themselves in sheltered
coves and inlets, providing pic
nickers and fishermen with end
less thrills and gossip. Alas no,
says Ernest Lee, whose hand was
on the tiller of the boat which
ran down the monster in nearby
Saanich inlet.
"Full speed ahead we went
and hit it in the neck," said lee,
describing what he believes
were the last moments of Caddy.
"Down it went, and a minute
later came to the surface, just
about all in. I hit him again
with a little more pep. This
time Caddy sank, and did not
rise again."
Caddy (its full name was cad
borosaurus, derived from near
by Cadboro bay, where it was
once seen) features in Indian
folklore. But countless white
residents claim to have seen it.
One of these was Cyril B. An
drews of Pender island, in the
Gulf of Georgia, who back in
1934 signed an affidavit that
from a boat at a distict of 10
feet he had gazed into the mouth
of a monster some 40 feet long
as it gulped down a wounded
duck. Caddy, without a doubt,

expressed by crop experts in
Chicago.
They said the most serious as
pect of the flood situation as it
applied to the nation's food
supply concerned corn, planting
of which has been delayed by
the floods. But, they said, it was
considered possible that this loss
of time would be made up by
warm, sunny weather during
the summer.
A loss of between 5 and 15
per cent of the oats crop in some
stales was indicated, the ex
perts said, but they added that
winter wheat in much of the
southwest had not been touched
by rain.
Late last night the Missouri
river broke through weakened
points along the channel and
rushed northward across coun
try in eastern St. Charles coun
ty (Mo.) to meet the overflow
of the Mississippi near West
Alton, Mo. Every levee was
out along a 75-mile stretch from
Augusta to St. Charles, which
was considered in immediate
danger.
No Alleviation
In Price Squeeze
Washington, May 21 (at The
National Independent Meat
Packers associaton protested to
day that the administration's
program to grant subsidies to
meat processors in order to cut
consumer costs "will not in the
slightest degree alleviate the
price squeeze."
Wilbur Laroe, Jr., the organ
ization's general counsel, told
the house committee on small
business that the subsidy "is
to be limited to the additional
10 per cent reduction" contem
plated under the plan to roll
back meat prices 10 per cent.
"In other words," he argued,
while saying that inability to
obtain meat is forcing out of
business scores of independent
packers, "our members arc to
obtain no subsidy for that part
of the price squeeze which al
ready exists."
Laroe told the committee that
"it is all right to talk about en
forcement against black market
operators but the plain truth is
that our members are closing
up because the black market is
still flourishing."
The assertion that indepen
dents have been unable to ob
tain meat was reiterated by
Frank Buckley, counsel and ex
ecutive secretary of the non
slaughtering meat processors
and wholesalers.
"You can't take on the big
packers and the government in
the same ring, and expect to re
main erect very long," he said.
Bolh witnesses protested
against any move to shift the
center of government regula
tion from Washington to Chica
go, which they described as the
home of the big packers.
Guffey Coal Act
Extended 90 Days
Washington, May 21 U,R)The
senate Thursday unanimously
agreed to a 90-day extension of
the life of the Guffey coal act.
The extension resolution now
goes to the While House.
The act was due originally to
expire April 26 of this year but
was extended 30 days by unani
mous agreement. The new ex
tension will run until August
26, providing time for more de
tailed consideration of a long
term extension. The act is de
signed to stabilize the bitumin
ous industry.
Of Road Taxes ;
County Clerk Henry W. Matt
son has completed computation
of distribution of taxes collected
under the 1.5 mills road levies
for 1941, 1042 and 1942-43 tax
rolls from June 30, 1942, such
distribution being to road dis
tricts comprising incorporated
cities and towns.
$2305.20, for 1942 was $4628.40
$2305.29. for 1942 was S4B28.40
and for 1942-43, $31,208.47.
Apportioned to cities and
towns, other than Salem, were
the following sums: Aumsville,
$46.48; Aurora, $122.65; Hub-
bard, $190; Jefferson, $234.79;
Mt. Angel, $543.72; Scotts Mills,
$40.74; Silverton. $1461.82;
Stayton. $518.93; Turner,
$140.77; Wood burn, $956,
89. Also the following amounts
were apportioned to the respec
tive towns, but credited against
the county's bill for improving
oiled roads in those towns; Don
ald, $48.10; Gcrvais. $154.86;
St. Paul, $77.18; Sublimity,
$78.58. The balance of the taxes
collected goes lo the county,
with the exception of 6 per
cent held out for cosls. The
apportionment is made on a 94
per cent basis only. The towns
which receive the funds are
apportioned on a basis of their
assessed valuation in propor
tion to that of the rest of the
county outside of Salem.
Previously these apportion
ments were made every year
with the towns being paid in
full. However, the state audi
tors insisted that the apportion
ments should be made on basis
of taxes collected only, and
as a result it is necessary every
year to include a summary ol
taxes collected on each assess
ment roll and for that reason
the apportionment this year
covers the taxes collected from
the past three rolls.
