federal bureau .of investigation,
related that Mrs. Abigale Agnes
Williams of San Xeandro was
beaten, to death on fn- eastern
Utah Indian- reservation after
one of iher- two attacker's began
to- sing a snatch of the" song,
"Love Letters in the: Sand," as
a pre-arranged signal . for . the

Held in the county jail here
on first degree murder . charges
for action by a grand jury- in
March are Roy Edward Ritchey

early hours of November 13 to.'

Grasping the situation despite
his injuries, Bruce McCandless
assumed command and gave the
orders which kept the battered
cruiser at the head of the col
umn until it could limp away to
port for repairs. ,
The action was the opening
engagement of the great three
day battle in which the biggest
Japanese armada that ever sail
ed ' against American forces in
the Solomons was routed. Only
today was McCandless, a resi
dent of Long Beach, Calif., re
vealed' as the man who took
command when his superiors
were killed.
The San Francisco led the
American charge against supe
rior enemy ships. On the flag
and navigation- bridge were

ghan, Capt. Cassin Young, and
McCandless.
The cruiser's guns, at short
range, delivered salvoes which
crippled a - Japanese battleship
of the Kongo class, leaving it
a battered hulk which was later
sunk.
But although the San Fran
cisco delivered the- first blows
of the engagement, it also re
ceived the first hits from the
enemy. The battleship's 14-inch-
ers wrecked the cruiser's bridge,
killing Callaghan and Young and
leaving McCandless momentar
ily ; unconscious from his
wounds. ''......
But the youthful skipper kept
the- flagship going kept it at
the head of the American col
umn which, plowing between
two lines of enemy warships, so
surprise and confused the Jap
anese that they iired upon each
other.
Yasui to Appeal

ican whose '..test case of Lieut.
Gen. 'John DeWitt's alien curfew
order drew a sentence ot a year's
imprisonment and a $5000 fine,
Friday filed notice of appeal.
Yasui, a graduate of Univer
sity of Oregon law school, based
his appeal to. the federal cir
cuit court on contention he was
not a Japanese citizen but a
citizen of the United States.
Judge James A. Fee in" a two-
prohged decision earlier in the
week said the western defense
command had no jurisdiction
over citizens without, a declar
