Allies Verging on
Military Maturity

Those war speeches by President Roosevelt and British Prima
Minister Churchill impress one as
the Allies' twenty-first birthday
the United Nations are verging
on military maturity.
Both declarations displayed a
tone of certainty or so it strikes
me that could only be based on
achievements . which, although
they lag far short of what they
ought to be, still arc leading
surely to victory. Facts war
ranting such calculation aren't
hard to find, for these points
stand out clearly:
Weight Now Felt
(1). American war production
has reached a point where its
tremendous weight is making it
self felt. Its momentum is in
creasing steadily, for we are no
where near our peak. Move
ment of our troops and equip
ment abroad pyramids. By im
plication President Roosevelt let
it be known that more than half
a million Yankee troops already
have been sent overseas.
(?.). July, August and thus far
in September we've (knock
wood) vastly reduced the dep
redations of the U-boats in the
western Atlantic. That's to say,
we have at least temporarily re
gained that control of the sea
which is vital to the movement
of our resources and men to the
theatres of war.
Assumed Aggressive
(3). We not only have been
holding the Japs, but have as
sumed the initiative with splen
did success in several sectors.
(4). The blockade of Europe
still hold tight one of the great
est of the allied assets and the
axis strength is on the down
grade,, due to lack of resources
of all kinds. Hitler's war indus
tries are slipping.
(S). Intensification of the
American and British bombing
of Germany is raising havoc with
Hitler's factories and transport.
There's no question now about
allied superiority in the air over
Europe.
(6). Thus far Hitler has failed
lo reach the objectives of his
mammoth assault on the Caucas

Part-Time Jobs
Urged by Council
Portland, Sept. 9. (U.R) The
Portland city council Tuesday
approved a resolution urging
persons to enlist in part time
jobs outside their regular em
ployment as one means of eas
ing the labor shortage.
Mayor Earl Riley, in announc
ing the council's approval, said
the council could not specific
ally ask city employes to seek
such employment, but could
merely approve their doing so.
Approval of the resolution
came after A. G. Johnson, agen
cy coordinator for the employ
ment service, and Arthur J.
Farmer, manager of the Port
land Chamber of Commerce, had
appeared before the council.
With 30 wives, Chief Sobuza
II is claiming the husband cham
pionship of Swaziland, where it
still is the pride and ambition
