Strike at Alton

Alton, 111., Sept. 8 (U.R) The
day shiit at the Smokeless Pow
der Division of the Western
Cartridge Co., went on strike to
day when the company refused
to reinstate Francis Bunzyt union;
president, who was discharged ;
ior what the company termed;
"subversive activities,"
The strike, cajled by the
Chemical Workers Union, Local
20024, was not authorized by
the American Federation of

walkout said they would support
the workers and demand the war
department take over operation
of the plant.
A company spokesman said
about 20Q workers were employ

some, although not a majority,
reported for work. The union
said about 800 men were affect
ed. The walkout climaxed a long
dispute between the union and
the company.
